Great lens, I own this for my Panasonic G2. Nice and small, good range, good optical quality. This is the price it should be, I can't believe that they try to charge the usual outrageous MSRP of $300 for this. This model by the way is mechanically and optically identical to the newer "R" version of this lens; they just rebadged it and changed the looks to be more in line with their current lineup. So save yourself some money and grab this lens if you want a telephoto.
Relevant thread: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums...angemode=1 This Olympus/Cameta "refurb" and "factory demo" relationship has been occurring for a long time. Same story, different day Now that Olympus has been outed and is back on track to build themselves up correctly, we will hopefully stop seeing this.

As far as telephoto lenses, this lens is much smaller than the Panasonic 45-200mm and 45-175mm lenses, but optically at least as good if not better. I prefer the Olympus 40-150mm to the Panasonic lenses, because it's more in line with what I want from a micro 4/3 lens. Actually, thinking on it, if you already have the 14mm, a perfect kit for you would be to grab yourself the 25mm (or 20mm if your budget can't handle it), and then this Olympus 40-150mm. This way you will have all ranges covered in a good compact kit. |

thanks, Schnitz. I was really looking to hear PQ differences b/w the Oly and Panny lenses with almost similar focal length range. there was a post on the Panny 45-175mm one y'day for $280. and this one is just half. so I was wondering if there were any limitations with this one.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums...944&page=1 The Olympus also zooms conventionally by twisting the zoom ring, while the Panasonic 45-175mm uses a camcorder-style zoom toggle button (I like the zoom ring better, but the power zoom is better if you do video). Another caveat: cheap-ass Olympus don't include a lens hood or bag/case with the 40-150mm. At $140, it's not a big deal for me. If I were paying MSRP, I'd be livid. Even with the Panasonic at $280, you're still at double the price of the Olympus. If that $150 doesn't matter to you, then you should just order both and return the one that doesn't work. Seeing as how I bought the 40-150mm, you can guess which route I went. That $200 savings is enough to pay for a 35mm f/1.8 for my Nikon, which is a more even performer than the $550 25mm f/1.4 for our micro 4/3 cameras. And that's the rub: by all means use this camera system; I often take it as it's much easier to carry than an SLR system, and the constant live view is very helpful in many situations. But overall for the price, it starts to be hard to justify, so make sure that you buy smart. |

Except the price is about 2x diff
Don't get me wrong, I loved my 20mm and wish I didn't sell it.Last edited by teaberry; 07-17-2012 at 08:35 PM.. |

http://www.bythom.com/nikon-vr.htm http://www.bhphotovideo.com/indep...en-turn-it http://www.picturecorrect.com/tip...reduction/ Back when I worked for a newspaper, when the IS lenses and digital were relatively new, we ended up buying ourselves the non-IS version of the 70-200mm f/2.8 Canon lens. For most shooting, IS was unnecessary, plus if you shot with it on it would slightly hurt your sharpness, and last if we really wanted stability, a true solid foundation like a tripod or even a $30 monopod gave 10 times better results than using image stabilization (heck, even just stabilizing against a rail, tree, bench, etc worked better than IS). Even with VR II, IS II, and all those other new editions of the technology out, it still holds true; they just increase the shutter speed decrease at which the system works, but you still have all the other shortcomings. |
