Is VGA or HDMI the best way to connect a computer to an HDTV?
Obviously, HDMI is the best way but I couldn't fit the entire scenario in the title. I have a 32" 720P HDTV that I want to use as the main monitor on a dual monitor setup, along with my 19" LCD monitor. My PC has dual DVI out, my monitor has DVI and VGA out (I'll be using DVI for that one) and the 32" HDTV has VGA and HDMI. What I want to find out is if I should run DVI from the PC to VGA or HDMI in the HDTV? Thanks in advance! |

well you first need to play with the HDMI out do you have a fill or stretch option on the TV 720 is not really very good for a 32" TV for use as a monitor you are using a monitor that is made to be viewed at 4' away with one that is fine at 18", I don't think you will find a setting that works well and has a good picture. Go for the VGA from DVI and see how that looks at it should not cost anything for a dvi to vga adapter. 720P is about 22" ,monitor resolution.

I have basically the same set-up...I use DVI to 23" monitor and VGA to a 32" Samsung 720P TV and SPDIF from PC to receiver for sound. But, I use the monitor for PC apps and the TV for stock charts and movies from PC. I have my video card set for 1360 x768 for the TV. Text will never look as good on the TV as it would on a high res monitor.

HDMI is more convenient as it'll carry audio
Intel i7 2700k | Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z| 16 GB Gskill Ripjaw X | Corsair H80 | 2x EVGA GTX 670 FTW | Crucial M4 256 GB SSD | Samsung F1 1TB | WD Black 2TB | Seagate Barracuda LP 2TB | Seagate Barracuda 3TB | WD Green 2TB | Creative Titanium HD | Sony BD Drive | OCZ ZX850 | CM Storm Trooper | Dell U2711 | Filco Majestouch Linear R Limited Edition | Filco Majestouch 2 Metallic Blue MX Blue | Razer Naga Epic | Creative Gigaworks T40 II | Windows 7 Ultimate

older cards have 1 VGA and 1 DVI most of the 3000 & 4000 series ATI cards have this capability if its Nvidia, it may be more of a "Crapshoot" but, if he wants to make it work all he needs is a SPDif cable connected from the video card to his onboard audio or sound card then it'll pass through for 8000 series 9000 series, 200 series nvidia cards 400 series is when they copied amd/ati and went with onboard audio. |

TV's treat the VGA input differently, usually accepting 1024x768, and they disable some of the scaling which makes text look so bad. So on some sets, you'll get a better picture with VGA than with HDMI/DVI.
But in general, what a TV does is it will compare adjacent pixels and blend them. This makes motion video look "cleaner" but it makes text look terrible. This is the main reason why TV's usually make terrible PC monitors. They also drive the backlight and contrast for viewing from ten feet instead of two feet, which causes a lot of eyestrain when used at two feet. They simply are not designed for sharp text on a white background. |
