the ATH-M50 are great headphones...and that's probably an understatement. I got these a while ago when it was $99 as it's normal price (I got them for $79), and was amazed how it wasn't more expensive. Now that they prices have risen on them to $150ish, I'm not surprised at all. Get them!

coiled or straight?

Have the coiled version myself, couldn't ask for a better entry-level audiophile pair of cans.

Straight is REALLY long. I have a pair and they sound superb however, while I do like straight over coiled, the straight version is almost obnoxiously long if you are going to use them in a highly mobile fashion. Something to consider.

my fiance needed new headphones for work, so we got one with the removable cable. Not interested in the lower end ones as shipping padding.

I got the coiled cable and wish I'd gotten the straight instead. The coiled isn't good for anything but getting in the way.

It's great for portable use with my mp3 player. Also my speakers sit on my desk so I can plug the jack right in there. I have a straight cord pair of ATH-M30s and I had the hardest time keeping that cord in line when going out in public. If you need a long cord to run from a stationary location that won't change, by all means. Otherwise the coiled is really good and fits all my needs. Hasn't stretched in 2 years either.

I have the straight and I braided the cable so it's 1/3 the length. It adds more "weight" to the cable feeling, but the length is much better and it looks ok.

Oh, they also have this in white and silver. Can't remember which was the limited edition one. The white looks sweet, but probably very hard to keep clean and looking good.
