Oh dear, another purchase from me. SD and the Steam sales are taking a toll on my wallet.

I have a 17.3 inch HP envy that constantly overheats and turns itself off. Would this work for it? If not could anyone recommend a different one please.

Thanks OP, the cooling pad I'm using now is about big enough for a 14" and my 15.6" will love the upgrade, I especially like the rear air intake.

Everyone says that these dented box items are basically new items. That's true (from personal experience), but sometimes, dented box sales come with only a 90 day warranty. That's the case here.

Edit: If you'd like to see for yourself, click on the Specifications tab and look under Warranty Information. It says "90-day limited hardware warranty." I wouldn't worry about it in this case, but for a $100 Harmony remote or Dinovo Mini, I'd at least take it under consideration. Logitech often provides 3-5 year warranties. In my experience, if something breaks, they ALWAYS take care of you. Three out of four times, they sent me a brand new replacement without asking me to send the damaged part back. The fourth time, I did have to send it back because the retail price was high ($200), but they again sent me a new replacement.

I've seen so many reviews that say these things don't do anything. I'm inclined to believe them.

These are handy for other items that get warm as well (e.g. routers, DVRs, etc.) if you have a surge protector with USB port.

I highly doubt it was actually the fault of the cooling pad. Most circumstances 5 volts and 500mA cannot start a fire no matter how much you short it out. The guy was probably high and dropped his joint in his bag of cheetos.

They do two things... one is blow air up into the laptop... so if you had this on a couch or your lap, it would benefit the laptop and your lap. Even if you don't plug the usb in to run the fan, this is still going to help your laptop draw in air (the pad is curved with rubber supports to keep the laptop in place) and save your lap from the heat.

The other thing it does is position the laptop at an easier angle to type on.

What it isn't is an AC unit blowing chilled air into your poor laptop's likely dust filled intakes to bring it down to 0C.

Your laptop most likely just needs to be cleaned and dusted out. My 17 inch custom gaming laptop was doing the same thing, i went through 3-4 laptop coolers and it still wasn't good enough. So i decided to clean it and use a air duster, now it stays on without a laptop cooler... with a laptop cooler its even better..
