I think the last time I used AVG was version 8, then with version 9 they had a link checker and other things with I found useless. I was always pro AVG before, but maybe they changed things in the newer versions. |

A lot of folks prefer MSE, but I have done tons of testing, and MSE causes more drag on the system than AVG or Avira. All 3 are good programs, but it's only natural to be attracted to the lightest one that causes the least disturbance, ie: AVG. |

Honestly if someone has a virus, unless it's something trivial, like that DNS trojan, I wouldn't even clean it. I would just carry copies of all the various install images and backup important data then wipe the drive. In the end it saves time and headaches.

![]() Nothing like a re-install use a USB install.... Takes maybe 15min http://www.microsoftstore.com/sto...vd_dwnTool Of course the user might be reluctant at first... but it is sometimes to only way to be sure. If I spend more than say 30-40 minutes on virus removal its always a re-install. |

Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

Most home users have no idea what you are talking about when discussing reloading from a USB drive. Let's get real here.
AVG was fine for a long time, but when it went to the 2012 version, it messed up some older computer and took up a lot of resources that were not necessary at all. It slowed them to a crawl, and that's when I bailed on AVG free. I went to MSE and there were some issues with that as well, not only with older computers, but with new ones, as well. I found that once you install it, you need to update it and then run a full scan, no matter how long it takes to finish. Once that initial full scan is done, you are golden and all the scans, whether quick or full will go through in a decent amount of time. I read up on it and it has something to do with the 'engine' used and running the FULL scan one time seems to fix the slow issue with it. Get Ccleaner Slim with no toolbar [ccleaner.com] You will still need to uncheck all the extra shortcuts you don't need . . . Be sure to update before running it.
Get Malwarebytes free edition [cnet.com] Be sure to update before running it. Get SuperAntiSpyware free edition (SAS) [cnet.com] Be sure to update before running it. |

These aren't high end PCs like mine, with Core i7 and 16 GBs of RAM or more...I'm working with people that have XP PCs with P4s or worse, 2 GBs of RAM if I'm lucky, but usually 512 MBs, with only on-board graphic cards. MSE worked alot better than AVG over the years. I'm going to start charging more for servicing PCs with XP, it's just painful sometimes trying to fix one that slow and old. I usually end up saving pics from the hard drive and other important stuff for them and reformatting the thing because it's so bad. Maybe I'll try installing AVG 2012 on an extra laptop I have once I reformat it. Last edited by KoopaTroopa; 07-22-2012 at 07:11 AM.. |

I remember the exact date when AVG went from one of the lightest AV programs, to a resource hog (not as bad as Norton, but still bad), and that took place on January 1 of 2008. The next best thing was Avira, but at that time, you had to update it manually every day. I had a bunch of public computers in the bar, so I had a choice between having to manually update them all or live with the drag caused by AVG, and that drag was simply unacceptable, so we went with Avira. I can't say for sure when it was that AVG started offering custom installations that permitted users to stop all those resource gobbling extras, but I noticed it in the last year and upon testing it against other AV programs, I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was the lightest of all the good ones. I can't say for sure how many computers I have installed the new AVG on, but it's in the hundreds and there are zero complaints. |
