Foods exclusive to america to try?

I'd say BBQ, soul food, and Cajun/Creole food. I don't agree with the hot dogs or hamburger idea. Because, as shown on many travel shows, hot dogs and hamburgers are sold in most countries of the world. Not only can you find American chains in those countries (i.e. Mcd's or Burger King), but you also find local joints that serve these "American" staples with their own local style.

Tex-Mex is a decent idea too. For me though, I've never been crazy about it. I prefer authentic Mexican food.

try clam chowder, pastrami, Shoofly pie, and Smithfield ham

Deep fried anything. I knew a British guy that was shocked when he was at the county fair and was literally able to deep fry anything he wanted. He said "Only in America.."

Funny that coming from a Brit. They take flour dough, add in some beef fat, bake it then pour gravy over it and call it a 'pudding'.
