This is ironic, I posted on the Zojirushi thread yesterday before all the luddites got going. I'm going to largely repeat myself - "Picked up the Sanyo equivalent several years ago for $90 with an Amazon Goldbox deal. Fuzzy logic cookers are for people who either eat a fair bit of rice (why they are popular across much of Asia, go figure ) or for people who like perfectly cooked rice and don't have time to keep a close eye on it. I cooked rice for years on a stove top, then was given an old style simple heating-element style cooker, and then I purchased the Sanyo. It paid for itself in that you will never scrub burned rice off the bottom of a pot again, and the fact that brown rice and steel cut oats are easy to cook in these (versus being tricky on a stove top, they are easy to burn if you are doing other things)..." The Zojirushi cookers are considered the best, and priced accordingly. With the discount these Panasonics are roughly half the price, and like my Sanyo they occupy the tier just below the Zojirushi - excellent but not the premium brand. If you are looking for a fuzzy logic rice cooker, this is one of the best deals I've seen since some ones at Kohls when they had the stacking discount coupons (which Kohls almost never does). I'd seriously consider getting one if I didn't have a Sanyo already at this price.

Can one of these units serve double-duty as a vegetable steamer also?

I am not sure about better-ness. Both of them will cook rice.
Matters to me about the pot. If its a non-stick heavy bottom
then rice wont stickk.
