I strongly recommend the RNDP200U if you are looking for a 2 drive model. It has a dual core atom with 1GB of ram. It is very responsive compared to most other home NAS's out there and super easy to set up. It worked flawlessly with Windows, Linux and Mac. It also worked with my Xbox 360, PS3, tivo, samsung tv, samsung bluray. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pro...6822122080

I've had my ReadyNAS Duo V2 for about a month and a half and love it. I got it from amazon for $136.65 but the prices seem to have gone up. The bundle on newegg with the DuoV2 and the 2x WD Red 2TB drives doesn't seem too bad w/ the promo code. I put 2x WD 3tb Green drives in mine, hadn't heard about the new Red drives back then. ZNC, Sab, Sick, Couch, & Head runs great on it. I would say you have to be a little familiar with Linux to install programs yourself if an addon is not available.

I have one of these Netgear NAS's and I wouldn't recommend it unless it was ~$100 or less. The support is terrible on these, the compatibility of drives that work in these without error is limited, the user interface is terrible and slow, the response of the NAS is slow, the UI acts differently based on the browser used to interface, VERY LOUD FAN Noise and annoyingly "magflashlight" bright led's, etc. It was so problematic even after adding a 1GB memory upgrade that I went out and purchased a QNAP model and the difference is night and day. It may cost a little more but not more than the satisfaction of using a well supported and highly functional product (and whisper quiet) with long product support and lifecycles.
As I couldn't return the Netgear since I was past the return window, I use it to backup the QNAP in case of catastrophe as it's speed is less important when it's running a background rsync and since that's all it's used for, It became an expensive but compact backup service. Albeit, one in which I don't necessarily have full confidence. The day I would have to restore from it would be very scary. Also, the fan noise on the DUO was so bad that I spent another $30+ dollars on an exterior 80mm fan upgrade just to make the thing tolerable for even backup use. The good news is that the DUO is now quiet and the LED's have been "blacked out" but it shows how bad the engineers are at Netgear that would put a stamp of approval on this device for the SOHO market. To be fair, I felt I should add that my model is the Duo V1, but while the upgraded hardware of V2 may make it a bit more responsive, you will still have most of the other problems. Btw, my V1 is already no longer supported with software updates and the last update they put out for it actually removes functionality instead of adds any improvements so I didn't upgrade to it but it doesn't matter to me since it's just a backup box. Otoh, the QNAP updates work across the entire product line and not individual units like Netgear so a software upgrade to one will usually benefit all the models and you don't have to be a Linux guru to use a Qnap because of their software installation packages which makes installation of additional applications and their updates easy. I know I sound like a QNAP salesman but I love that dang thing. Last edited by cborder; 07-20-2012 at 01:19 PM.. Reason: List my model to be fair. |
