Best for those who pretty much stick to treadmills. Terrible if you like free weights. Not so hot if you like Nautilus type equipment, either.
They're decent for lifting if you can make do without a few things. I'm not the biggest fan of using the Smiths for my compound lifts (bench, deadlift, squat), but it's better than paying out the butt at another place. They have decent cable machines and enough dumbbells unless you're an extreme musclehead. It requires some compromise and creativity, but it's been working for me for several months now.
Besides, women like them, and the eye candy is very nice.
One thing to keep in mind with all gym memberships, your health plan or employer may have a 'wellness' benefit where you can often get reimbursed for part or all of a gym membership. In my case, my Blue Cross plan reimburses up to $150/year, as long as I submit a copy of the bill at the end of the year. So check with your HR department or health plan.
As for all of the Planet Fitness haters, duh of course, you can join a MUCH better gym and pay a LOT more. Most of the other gyms in my area charge anywhere from $30-100/month(often plus initiation fees). PF is great if you just want the basics and don't want to pay a lot. If you want amenities, go someplace else, fork over the extra money, and stop your whining.
Note that it is nearly all franchises, so the 'deals' and the quality of the specific gym will vary widely, so go in and visit the one you are interested in. They run promotions pretty frequently, so if you'd rather have the $10/month deal(which they frequently offer), just keep checking. One advantage to the $10/month deal is unlike most gyms, PF generally(YMMV) doesn't make you commit to long term contracts. So depending on the contract you sign, if you don't like it, you can often quit without much of a penalty.
