Is there any evidence indicating that outside of the group of fired PSU employees, anyone else had knowledge of the criminal activity? If not, then there is no point in punishing anyone else (the innocent). What corrective measure do you want to see happen in the future by punishing the innocent? That they need to adopt a sense of clairvoyance when it comes to campus crimes? It just doesn't make sense.

I'm saying be consistent. If they're punishing the football team, that makes little sense because all the coaches have been fired. If they're punishing all the other administration that covered it up as "lack of institutional control," the entire department should have sanctions against them, not just the football team.

i agree the department should be punished, but why then would you say the university in general should not be punished?

the entire student body will suffer for many reasons already.... bad reputation, likely reduction in donations to both sports and to the university in general, an avelanche of civil suits from the victims of sandusky, etc. etc.

I doubt the courts will agree with you on this. The president knew about it when he was running the show. That means he used his power as president to cover it up. You can not argue he was acting in self interest alone as his action where not to protect himself, his actions were to protect the school. This means the victims will own Penn state in court and find that the university is to blame as are the people involved. Besides, you are taking this all at face value, the investigation was internal so i dont know if other people knew (such as the board). its possible they did, which would increase thier culpability.

One of the reasons to have punishments in place is to deter this behavoir from others and for institutions to take responsibility for thier actions. Its similar to governments when they "apologize" for the sins fo thier past (slavery, war, etc. etc.)

I know it does not make sense to you. Maybe the current administration can explain it to you better. They seem willing to accept thier role [pennlive.com]. They want to settle out of court with each victim. They must be asinine according to you.

I am not clear as to what you are saying. Are you per chance suggesting that the university is not financially responsible for the damage and pain suffered by the victims? If not then exactly what are you saying?

If say, the NCAA said, "We are taking 10 scholarships per year over the next 4 years and redistributing them to the other teams in your football division (allowing 10 other programs to each have 1 additional scholarship), I think that would solve that particular point of depriving high school football players of needed scholarships.

The only problem here is I think the idea of other schoole 'benefiting' from the punishment for this awful situation is a litte unsetteling.

To be fair to the NCAA, there was also a record fine involved and other penalties like vacating the wins during of the team during the years the scandal occured. It wasn't just taking away scholarships. The fine was very impressive, and so should the bringing to light the names of everyone involved.
