I can also hook up the old hard drive externally via USB- not sure if there is a way to grab Win and pull it over to the new HD.
generally it's recommended to do a clean install on an SSD. The reasoning is to something about sectors not being aligned correctly when cloning from HDD->SSD. I don't understand why exactly, but I just did as I was told.
These days, if you're downloading ISO's and other installation media, it's easier and faster to copy them to USB keys than burning discs. They run way faster, and if you need to make small changes (like adding a driver), you don't need to re-burn the whole thing.
