Can I use an iPhone standalone?
A friend of mine wants to let her kids use her old iPhone as a pad computer. She wants to activate the WiFi on it to connect to her home network. She has no service on it. It was AT&T and it is the first gen iPhone. Can this be done?

Yes, should not be a problem. Know that a lot of apps won't work since it can't run some of the newer versions of iOS.

Let me clarify that this is an OLD iPhone with CANCELLED service. Can you still connect it?

It's probably going to be close to nonfunctional.
3.1.3 is the latest version for the iPhone 2G, so most (if not all) current apps will not run. If you refer to your husband/wife as 'DH/DW', you're too old to be active on a forum.
If you ask for marriage advice on a(ny) forum, you should seriously reevaluate your life. If you don't know the difference between 'their', 'there', and 'they're', I automatically assume you have a mental disability (same goes for to/two/too and your/you're/yore). |

But yes, when I bought a new iPhone, AT&T made my old iPhone into what's basically an iPod Touch -- the phone service is deactivated, but all of the other features work fine, including WiFi. |

When you turn on Airplane Mode, WiFi automatically turns off. You have to go and manually turn WiFi back on again. Not only that, but I could also make and receive phone calls using Talkatone linked to my Google Voice account while in Airplane Mode and on WiFi. Last edited by vec; 07-24-2012 at 10:34 AM.. |
