Is this a good deal?
I have a 3 year old low-end 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo with 9600GT video card, 2GB memory, 1TB HDD. It's fan is so noisy that I've been wanting to buy a new system. I do play MW3 time to time and very rarely video editing. I'm wondering if performance gained would justisfy $500? |
|
just needs cpu+ram+motherboard + maybe gpu. i5 cpu = $195 8gb ram = $38 motherboard = $60+ gpu = $60+ |

I would recommend you to upgrade if you have the budget for it. You'll definitely notice a leap in performance. |

WTF? 10GB of RAM? Who does that?
I really don't see how this is a good deal considering the Lenovo Outlet gets i5 desktops for about $300 even from time to time. Drop in an $80 graphics card and it'll stop this system for less money. Last edited by The_Doug; 07-24-2012 at 03:42 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

not only is it an odd amount of RAM (2gb in single channel dedicated to the gpu maybe?) it is running slow RAM, which is a huge bottleneck for APUs Memory 10GB PC3-10600 DDR3 |

Why buy this for $500 when you can do any of the following: 1) Build an i5-2500K build yourself on a $60 B75 motherboard and OC it to 4.3GHz with a $15 Hyper 212+, then add an Antec Neo Eco 620C for $30 and a $210 7850 that'll blow this system out of the water for $520...although that requires you to own an HDD and case already. 2) Buy an i5-2400 on Lenovo's Outlet for $300 then add a $150 GTX 560 or similar and a CX600 for $500 total and you get a copy of Windows, case, and everything else with it for $500. 3) Buy a Lenovo Outlet Y570 for $435 w/ i5 and GT 550M 4) Find some AMD deal I'm not familiar with and add a discrete card. This system isn't a bad price, but it's not close to slick. |

Anyway, this system should be totally adequate for my 14yo girl. I would say that a new one unopened is worth $499. I didn't find that price until too late. I was looking at $599. This new APU only draws 65 watts, therefore the fan should run slowly if at all. Remember thats 65W for the CPU and GPU! The system should stay nice and cool with minimal fan spin. Plus it has DDR3-1600 memory. This is fairly fast and par for this tech level. Once you add in other features, like the mini wifi card & 1TB HDD & 7660 graphics, etc., you can not build this system for $500. It's a good value, IMHO. Now, DDR3-1600 is a bottleneck for Radeon 7000 series, but a separate vid card adds cost. DDR5 vid memory just is not cheap. Graphics performance here should be fine for everything right now. Extreme games may not run at highest settings, but will be playable just fine. Myself? Well I have an Intel i7-3930K with an XFX Radeon HD7970 factory overclocked system that I built. Believe me, it cost gads more than this HP. ![]() Buy this A10 system new for $499 if you can get it. It's a good value. |

Any other opinions / reviews / better deals? I'm looking for a new system and would rather just order something, ready to go, instead of tinkering around, and waiting for deals to pop up... simply don't have the time. I've been out of the game for a while, so I'm not up to date on the performance of i3 vs i5 vs i7, A6 vs a8 vs a10, and all the different generations.. I'm looking for a machine for basic Photoshop, nothing too intensive, web browsing, and that's about it.
