As someone who has never owned a proper set of running shoes, is there anyway to figure out what works for me without going into a running a store?

Sometimes based on the curve of your arch you can have a basic understanding of what kind of shoe you need.

For me, I have a very flat foot so I over-pronate. However, it has been determined that I only mildly over-pronate (even though my arch would say I should majorly over pronate). I use shoes that have a little bit of motion control or stability in them.

For neutral runners, who have a decent arch, yet not too much, typically they will wear a neutral shoe.

For people with very high arches, they may tend to over-supinate and need more of a neutral cushioned shoe.

Not sure if that helps at all. But just a cliff's notes version of feet... there is a lot more that goes into it, but this is a basic starting point.

You have it wrong - low arches = pronate = stability shoes

Neutral shoes = high arches or normal arches

You really should go to a running store at least once to get a proper fit so you know what type of shoes to buy in the future.

You can look at how your old shoes wore to see whether you get even wear, wear on the outsides (underpronate) or insides (overpronate). Your arch you can tell by how high the curve is on your foot & the imprint it makes below.

If you must resist going to a running store.. Dunk your feet in water, step on a piece of paper (colored paper is better for easier visibility) or your bathroom floor tiles (be careful not to slip). Just step solid the way you normally would, don't move or wiggle around or you'll mess up the imprint. Think of it as stamping something with ink. You press down once or you might mess up the transferred stamped image.

Now step off the paper or floor tile & you'll see your foots imprint of how you normally stand/land. This will work for most people & be similar to how your foot moves & lands while running.

If you see your entire foot imprinted your flat footed.

See nothing in the center you have medium to high arches.

See the outer imprint more pronounced than the inner or not inner at all you underpronate.

See the inner imprint more pronounced than the outer or not the outer at all you underpronate.

Now that you know your foot, check out the below link to select shoes.

If you run a lot don't be cheap & make sure you get the right fit. I recently have been doing 12-15 miles daily, 4-7x/week up from my previous 5-8mi, 4-7x/week & I don't touch shoes that msrp for less than $85... $100 is on the lower end to me. What you buy them for is another story.. I've bought previous model $140 shoes for $60-80. cheap shoes, shoes that don't fit right, are asking for injuries. I also alternate pairs between days. One day I'll be running in Asics nimbus, next day brooks glycerine, following day saucony triumphs, & I have a pair of Nike Vomero's in the mix, but generally I don't like Nike.

This will give most people a general idea, but as someone who runs 2-5,000 miles a year, & spends thousands of dollars & hours per year training & running, I urge you to support your local running stores.

+1 on supporting your local running store. great source of knowledge to tap into. getting a pair fitted at a local shop would also provide a point of reference for future purchases. running warehouse uses shoefitr technology to map the inside of their shoes allowing you to compare your current shoe to the prospective purchase for size, and fit. shoefitr is a great help when buy online.
