I don't know why I bought one. It is pretty neat to get out at night and see just how far it will shine. I have used a few times to point out stars and things to my g/f's son. Oh, and the pets love it also.

The batteries last a while also. Ive had the same batteries in mine for several months now. (with moderate use)

its great, very bright and shines just about as far as you can see. It will not pop balloons though, (unless you do the mod I posted above)

yeah, I have seen videos of them melting plastic, lighting matches etc... those are quite expensive I would imagine. I think I remember seeing one that was around $1000 that would not pop a balloon but you could see it during the day.
