How long should I play a game before passing judgment?

15 hours is a bit much I think. I hated several games after far less time, and it was well deserved. If a game can't get good until 15 hours in, I honestly want nothing to do with it.

Well, alot of the games I play are 60-70 hours. I understand what you're saying though and I'm guilty of giving up on a game way too quick. Example: Skyrim after 3 hours.

hmmm... well, from what I've learned in the GL, you really only need to play the intro level. You know, like the tram ride at the beginning of Half Life. What a bore! Or like the plane crash in Bioshock, I have to swim? Wow, terrible games for sure.

For RPGs I think 12 to 15 hours is a good length of time. Some of them really take a while to get moving. After 15 hours you should have been introduced to the battle and leveling up systems, met lots of the main characters, seen plenty of the story, explored at least a little bit, found/bought some gear upgrades, etc. If you don't like it at that point you probably won't fall in love later on. There may be exceptions to this rule (FF XIII) which seem to have 20+ hours of intro stuff, but I think you should be able to tell that and make an exception on a case by case basis.

When I think about all the games I've played this generation and how long it took me to get hooked or quit...I can confidently say that I never put in more than 15 hours on a game I didn't like.

I start using cheat codes when I get tired of a game. I try to keep my rule of beating games I buy. At the very least, I can speed through games that would have normally taken a much longer time.

Once you've learned the controls I'd give it an hour maybe two tops before I chuck the game. That kind of what I did with Rift.
