Hey dkinla, I don't have much experience when it comes to fishing, but I'm planning on going camping with my friends this weekend at Kern River and I wanted to fish for some trout or bass. I was wondering if you could help recommend a rod to go with one of those reels you suggested and possibly anything else I would need to fish. I have already looked into getting Berkley Powerbait to use as bait.

sorry I don't think I got your message before...

A size 1000 reel would be good for trout/panfish... a 2500 size reel is a bit larger, and would be good for trout/bass.

as for the rods you could use for trout/bass... I'd suggest a 6' or 6'6" light or medium action rod.

too bad you missed out on the abu garcia cardinal spinning rod/reel combo I posted here a couple days ago at Sport Chalet... that was quite the deal and perfect for someone like you...

something that would work great would be a Shimano Sienna 2500 spinning rod/reel combo in 6' or 6'6"... hopefully talk to someone there that knows something about trout fishing and they should help you out.

I'd recommend getting 4lb mono line, size 18 treble hooks for powerbait, some size 8 or 10 salmon egg hooks and some salmon eggs (Pautzke salmon eggs/green label), a few small panther martin spinners, a few small rooster tails, a small kastmaster, some split shots, small snap swivels, and maybe some 2lb fluorocarbon leader if they're really finicky. You could also try casting out small pieces of nightcrawlers as well on size 6 or 8 mosquito hooks.

cast your bait upstream and let it drift down with the current... after a few casts, keep moving if you get no bites at the Kern. They're still stocking the upper Kern pretty heavily, so the action should be pretty good.

I decided to go with the Shimano Sahara 2500 and a Shimano Sellus 2-Piece Spin Rod, 6'6" medium action.

What do you think of that rod? I basically looked through every rod available from Shimano and Okuma that was for freshwater fishing and was a spinning rod. I also went with it because it was a 2-piece, whereas a 1-piece would not fit in my car.

I'll be stopping by Sport's Chalet tomorrow to buy the rest of what I need from there. I have a few more questions though. Would the 4lb mono line that you suggested have a higher risk of snapping compared to a 10lb mono line? If so, should I just go with something with a higher rating just to be safe? Is South Bend a reliable brand when it comes to fishing line, hooks, split shots, etc? They seem to be really cheap in price.

The Sellus rod looks fine, but a bit expensive for your purpose. I'd look at the Shimano Scabard or Stimula rods at Sport chalet. You can probably buy 2 of them for the price of your Sellus Maybe get one rod 6'6" in medium, and another rod in 6' or 5'6" in light or ultralight action for smaller lures.


South bend tackle is kinda cheap in terms of quality. As for the line.. Problem with putting 10 lb. mono or something stronger on a small reel is that it won't cast well at all when you're using light lures and light sinkers with bait. 4 lb. will be fine for trout. Just don't horse the fish in and loosen the drag just a little. Some good cheap line would be maxima ultra in 4lb. or p-line fluoroclear, or if you wanna pay more, berkley 100% fluoro line.

For instance, just tie on a size 6 mosquito hook to the end of the line, put a small piece of nightcrawler on it, then put on maybe 1 or 2 split shot weights about 8" above the hook and cast it out upstream at the river and let it float down, once it passes you downstream, reel it in and try it again a couple times... if no bites, cast to a different spot or move... you might see some trout holding in small pools as well. If you have 10lb mono or something stronger on that reel, it's not going to cast very far at all when you're only using a couple split shot or small 1/8 oz egg sinker. Same goes with a light trout lure like a panther martin at 1/16oz.

I think you should really stop by your local mom'n pop tackle shop... those guys will know much more about trout/bass fishing than most of the people who work at Sport Chalet/Sports Authority/etc. You don't necessarily have to buy everything from the local tackle shop, but at least you'll get some good information about what you need, etc.

would either of these be decent for a catfish reel? would look for a medium/heavy abu rod to match it with

the 8lb braided, cast and seems to weigh more like 4lb mono. ..just wondering why peeps even use mono anymore when braided seems so-o-o-o much better in every way, except for cost....but it seems like the braid doesn't even need to be changed/replace 1/2 as often? Alot of mono seems to get real curly fairly quick....
