Do you need a receiver to hook up one of these or can it be connected to the TV itself?

Could I use my FiiO E17 amp to connect my TV audio to this system? And would it be worth it for the sound?

You need a receiver. But this is a very low price for a set of 5.1 speakers. There are often deals on low-priced receivers on SD so u can buy this and have a low-priced entry level surround sound system
