What should I do with this server?
They just game for FREE a Dell Power Edge SC1420 with two Xeon CPU,no ram no hard drives....what can I do with this server?

tie it to a rope and use it as a boat anchor?
...or part it out on ebay. hard drives/raid controller will be among the most valuable parts of the server. I have several of these in my server room - and several more on the side for spare parts. Like all servers you wouldn't want to use one in your house. |

It looks like 2gb of ECC ram costs about $50, A hard drive would cost probably at least that since its probably a SCSSI or SAS drive, of an older interface. I would not invest $100 in a machine from 2004, that will be pretty loud, and inefficient by todays standards, that I was unsure what I wanted to do with it. I would part it out.

Get some RAM, get a HDD or two, and set up a Linux box for file storage and perhaps a Samba server.

lol - I love when people call Dells "servers". Proliant - that's a server, Dell, that's a converted desktop. Throw it away or make art out of it.

 Flamebait anyone? Seriously, Dell provides enterprise servers for many companies. The low end stuff may be questionable, just as the low end HP stuff would be. |

But seriously I have been in charge of two data centers. One was 100% proliant and in the 8 years I ran the data center we didn't have a single hardware failure accept one mother board and a few power supplies (other than hard drives). I ran a Dell shop for 3 years and there was nothing but hardware failures. I came to hate Dells. Every part that could fail, did. Mother boards, video cards, especially RAID controllers, even NICs. And even the hard drives with Proliant it was "no problem, you'll have it in 4 hours". With Dell they always wanted to troubleshoot. I got so fed up once that I told them to troubleshoot it on their time, that we had 4 hour response, and to get the god damned drive to us via courier NOW. After that conversation I would just tell them there were no lights on at all on the drive and to send a new one. Even with that they expected me to swap the drive carrier when I got it. F that! Dell servers are crap. |
