Microsoft released a new "redesigned" email service to replace Hotmail and compete with Gmail. It's called outlook.com [outlook.com] and you can grab a "good" address if you're quick.

I'm going to use this as a more "professional" email address for things like resumes and formal correspondence.

Beware the CAPTCHA appears to be case-sensitive - I wrestled with it quite a bit before getting one to go through, then locked out my IP address and had to use a proxy to get a test message sent. But it's a nice interface and quick. Plus, from just a few minutes' digging around, it looks like you can set up an alias or two and have mail delivered to different addresses go into different folders.

Kind of neat.

Also all the Hotmail addresses are likely reserved, so you can't get anything remotely close to a "good" name.

Nope. I got an address I couldn't get @hotmail.com with the @outlook.com domain.

sign out of hotmail account and then click sign in and then sign up for a new account. I was already logged in to hotmail when I clicked the link and it just used my hotmail account until I logged out and did the above which let me sign up for a new outlook.com address

Unless Microsoft want to kill their online services, otherwise they won't get rid of @hotmail.com. If Microsoft kill @hotmail.com why would people trust them and stay with them to use @outlook.com?

I now have my name for GMail and Outlook. Neat.

I cant believe that my rare id isn't available. Is it possible that if I had @ hotmail or ms passport very long time ago. They don't let you to create that id?

probably if they'll work with exchange server protocol, not just imap and do something similar to google apps before windows 8 launch, they'll have a chance to compete...

O I forgot the launch was today.. I'll give them another week
