Why should they be thrown out? They were employing the best strategy to get a gold.

its become a huge controversy actually as in all fairness it was within the rules. if rules are poor they are bound to be flouted. unfortunately its not easy to tank in a sport like badminton as it looks fairly obvious. but this happens in a lot of other sports worldwide

Ah, Sections 4.5 and 4.16 of the Badminton World Federation players' code. Much like the debate over whether to use the French or English translation of U.N. Resolution 242, or the meaning of the comma in the Second Amendment of the Constitution, the nuances of these two clauses will surely be debated in the academy for years to come ... well, in badminton academies, at least.

The sections stipulate that a player employ "one's best efforts to win a match" and bans "conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport." That's great as far as that goes, but there is no definition of the terms.

Olympic competition has gotten to the point where it is taken far too seriously when competitors feel the need to cheat, whether it be something like this or using performance-enhancing drugs to gain an advantage.

I think they should just go to a random drawing to determine who gets to go to the Olympics. And nobody would even know what event they would be competing in until about a week before they leave home to go to where the Olympics are being held.

If nothing else it would make at least some of the events hilarious to watch.

i saw the highlights and it certainally was hilarious. they were underplaying their talent so much that it became fairly obvious. but then again what would you expect if a mohammed ali fought with a poor ranked boxer

One of the Chinese badminton players disqualified from the Olympics for trying to lose a match has said she is quitting the sport, accusing the badminton governing body of ruining her dreams.
"This is my last match," Yu Yang wrote on her microblog account late Wednesday. "Farewell Badminton World Federation, farewell my beloved badminton."

Really? The puns get old quick.
