TU good deal. was thinking of using one of these for a gaming drive, technically speaking it should work well for that.
has anyone tried it? say im using steam, and play a game for a few days using the drive, loading the same game over and over should improve loading times correct? if of course the drive only has steam and 1-2 games to keep in its memory thanks for feedback if anyone has done this! Obviously, the largest performance boost will be with start-up time and programs that your operating system runs on a regular basis. |

That daily deal was for the momentus, but not the momentus XT, unless there was another one than the one I'm thinking of.
I use one of these in my desktop for gaming. It works great! Everything is faster than the regular spinning 7200 I was using before. Boot times are the best, but Skyrim, Dirt 3, etc. all load a lot faster than they did before. |

Thanks. I tried sniffing coke once, but the ice cubes got stuck in my nose.

This is a questionable deal (imo). Here's my reasoning:
1. Third-party seller could eventually be a problem with a warranty claim. (Not saying it will be, just could be). 2. 500Gb = $90 ($0.18/Gb) while 750Gb = $130 ($0.17/Gb) I'm definitely not going to TD this thread, because I understand why this 750Gb drive would be desirable. Just pointing out some possible pitfalls. For my money, however, I'll stick with the 500Gb. EDIT: Amazon has a few recerts of the 500Gb for under$80, so it's cheaper than the 750 (if you're OK with a recert). Last edited by Ion Control; 08-01-2012 at 11:21 AM..

This is definitely a good deal. I paid $150 a few months ago and that was considered a decent deal at that time.
The only thing that is questionable is if these hybrid hard drives really noticeably improve speed for day-to-day tasks. I'll be honest when I say it's not much better than a non-hybrid 7200rpm drive and lags way behind SSD. When I first installed the drive, startups and opening frequently used programs was almost SSD-quick. About a month later, it slowed and at this point is equivalent to a normal 7200rpm drive. Not sure if the flash memory on my hard drive died (no way to really check), or the firmware is just crap and the flash memory becomes muddled with garbage rendering it useless over time. |

I've read a few comments that say the algorithm starts to break down after a while, and system files get bumped off the drive. If you're not one who shuts down regularly, the firmware gets fooled into putting files on the SSD that aren't necessary to boot-up. They're cool drives, but SSD priced dropped too quick for Seagate to ever perfect things.
