'You do realize..' as long as the phone being sold has an ESN that is not blacklisted by the CDMA carrier there's nothing stopping someone from activating it on a line. It usually takes about 10 minutes over the phone which is a drawback, but its not nearly as bad as what you're alluding to..

I sell my old phones to friends, craigslist, or ebay like anyone with a GSM phone would.. Ive heard of people using their old smart phones as mp3 players, or pre-caching the maps while on wifi and taking it out on a trip as a GPS navigator. Some older phones still work as organizers or voice recorders. If the batteries are compatible such as the Sprint Hero, Evo Shift, and EVO4G, you could use your old phone as a standalone charger and swap batteries instead of leaving the phone tethered to an outlet to charge.

Point is.. you dont have one.
