What is the advantage to buy WD TV Live vs. Roku device??

When I bought a Wii game around Christmas the price dropped a few days later and I emailed them and was told they do not "price match" after I already purchased the product. The game was sold and shipped by Amazon too. I will call them anyway, cant hurt.

From what Ive read before is basically the Roku is good for if you mainly just want to do streaming and WD TV is good for streaming and as a media player. Then again it has been awhile since I read up on the Roku, so maybe they have changed it.

For those asking, I have four models of various WDTV Live products including this one. I picked them only because they'll play mkv files and I didn't really understand the concept of a media server. I've now ordered a Roku and am liking it better. Since I was streaming them off another PC anyway, I just installed Plex on that PC and now the Roku will play the files off it same as the WDTV would.

The WDTV players are just really glitchy, and have a really greedy company behind them. They freeze and lag and wonk out all the time, and I believe you have to pay for phone support after 30 days. What's worse is that you shouldn't buy this expecting it to support any new apps going forward. When WD got a Netflix app they made you buy a new model to use it. Then when the Hulu Plus app came out, you had to buy a newer model to use that. They won't add any new worthwhile apps to existing devices, rather they use it as a selling point for the next model they release.

For instance, there is currently no app for HBO Go on the WDTV Live. I'd wager there's a 95% chance that when they do make the app they won't make it available on the device you're buying here, and will instead release a new model that you have to buy.

Same here - unless Roku has changed, it primarily streams content (mostly from the internet). WDTV will do that, but it also can play files on your local network. I use mine almost exclusively to play movies from my computer upstairs to my TV downstairs.

As a side note: I like my WDTV, but just to warn you, they don't always work all that well over wireless. Pretty much every complaint you'll see about one comes down to using it over wireless. You'll either need a wire, or something like this:

Note that WD reused the "WD TV Live" name on different versions of the products. Posts really need to include the model number. This is WDBHG70000NBK-HESN. The old models are WDBAAN0000NBK-NESN and WDBABX0000NBK-NESN ("Plus").

Also don't forget that THIS [vizio.com] comes out at the end of the month for $20 more. WD and Roku are gonna have to step it up, or step their prices down.

I've actually been pretty surprised how good of a job WDTV does at automatically adding metadata to my downloaded files. If the filename is cluttered with a lot of extra tags, then I'll sometimes have to tell it which show or movie it's meant to be., but overall I'm impressed.

I also have yet to find a file it will not play, which is something I cannot say about the fire sale Sony SMP-N200 box I bought. I just like that WDTV is still in active development, with constant firmware updates, and not abandoned like some similar products.
