Been running this processor at 4.0 ghz for 3 years with a Hyper 212. Got mine at Fry's with a free motherboard for $150 shortly after it came out. Some of the Intel budget CPUs are finally starting to make me a bit jealous, but this will still handle just about anything you can throw at it. Great deal at this price. I run mine with a 5870 graphics card, and I still stomp just about every modern game into the ground with high settings at 1080p.
Yes, many of the newer Intel chips have better gaming performance at similar clocks. But for around $70, this could be a centerpiece for a budget beast rig. Last edited by prankies; 08-03-2012 at 10:50 PM.. |

I need some help, my desktops processor or motherboard went out & I am looking to get it back up and running.
I currently have a Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor & GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3L ATX Intel Motherboard. Are there any good deals on Intel processors or would this be something I should hop on? This machine will be used for gaming. |

this is a great deal
Esp if you live in CA, TD doesnt charge tax.
do you live near a microcenter? Last edited by agureghian; 08-03-2012 at 11:34 PM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

if you live near a frys, that intel i5 2400 was a good deal from this morning. $118. If not, you should consider this AMD phenom ii x4. it has a good base stock speed, good OC-ing capability, and comes with a free cooler at a great price. The cheapest Intel CPU is probably the i3 2120 it runs for about 125, when on sale, its about 105-110. As for mobos, youre going to have to decide on what you need. I dont live near a Fry's either, will this processor work with my current motherboard if it is just my processor that died, or do I have to replace both the processor and motherboard at once? Any motherboards anyone recommends that are decent price at the moment?

That's IF you need the new motherboard. Make sure your motherboard can't use an AM3 CPU first. Many AM2+ motherboards are 'AM3 ready' with just a bios update from what I remember. (assuming you have an AM2+ MB.) Better choices for a completely new system unless you already have a motherboard ready to use this AM3 CPU (or can find one for next to nothing), for a CPU that's not a major upgrade from what you have now. I've been waiting for a deal on this cpu. I figured this would be a quality processor to venture into the overclocking world on my first custom build. Could a Hyper 212 Plus handle this overclocked?! Any suggestions on a crossfire motherboard and a psu to power it all? Im thinking of running dual XFX or Sapphire 6850's. Unless otherwise noted, once again this is my virgin run on a gaming rig build. Trying to stay in the $600-700 range.

I would not waste the money if I were you. Instead of getting another CPU that will work with your current motherboard just buy both new CPU and new motherboard. Try to sell your old motherboard. Unless you can get another socket 775 processor for really cheap I would not buy one. You will get much better performance out of a newer CPU then with another CPU that's compatible with your motherboard. If you go this route you will need new RAM also. All this can be done for under $200 if you live near a Frys or Microcenter. If not it will be more. |
