Deal Details

I've been getting PM's since I posted THIS DEAL a few weeks ago about recommending a good deal on a budget tablet that had a better / nicer screen.
People did not like the 800x480 resolution of the other one, so I've been looking for deal with the same features or better and a screen that was at least 1024x resolution.

I found this deal and it's solid because of the price, the screen, the ability to charge via USB, the included screen protector, and the expedited shipping for free....among other things.

Cube U18GT Elite - $89.99 Shipped Free
Deal is now $94.99, but the custom Cube leather case and Free DHL shipping are included until sold out.
Here's the LINK [in4dealz.com] for the deal page.

Cube is an actual, "branded" tablet, not a generic Chinese knock-off.
They make a quality product and are very, very well known in the Android geek world. Stick Out Tongue
This should be considerably better quality than your standard no-name budget device.

Highlights:
  • 7 inch, Five-point, Capacitive, Touch screen, Ultra-crisp, 1024*600 Resolution
  • RK2918 CPU, Cortex A8 processor, clocked at up to 1.2 GHz. Vivante GC800 GPU
  • 1GB DDR3 RAM, 8GB NAND Flash Storage
  • Android 4.0 OS, Ice Cream Sandwich, Built-in Google Play Store (Android Market), can download hundreds of thousands of free and paid apps
  • 1080P decoding, supports 3D accelerated graphics
  • Supports WIFI and External 3G
  • Front-facing camera, Built-in HDMI capability with port
  • Can charge via USB Cable
  • Support Skype Video Chat

*Sidenote*
I would have posted it for McBub, (Big GrinBig Grin) just to give the haters something to scream about, but McBub is more than 20% higher than this site because of a clearance price.

Alright....so you want to put Jelly Bean on this bad boy...

1) Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s...?t=1903745
- Download the 1.2.2.a in the first post.
- Donwload the NAND attachment on that first post.
2) Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s...st35985913
-Download the kernel attachment.
3) Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s...tcount=263
-Download the attachment, the modell one. NOT the kernel.
4) Unpack your 1.2.2.a download, unpack your Kernel from step 2, put it somewhere you will remember.
5) Copy the NAND and Modell files to your tablet.
6) Open the RKTool as an admin, the one that came with your 1.2.2.a download.
7) Point the kernel image to the kernel file you unpacked.
8)Plug your USB cable into your computer/laptop
9)Hold power and vol+ on your tablet while you plug the microUSB into it
10) Your RKTool should recognize that you now have a device hooked up to it, this means you are in flash mode
10)EraselDB
11) check loader (leave everything else that was already checked, checked.)
12)run
13) When it's done, it should reboot and you will be in ClockWork Mod Recovery
14) Run the NAND fix from ClockWork Mod
15) Run the Modell fix from ClockWork Mod
16) Reboot via ClockWork Mod
17) Get your translater out. :0
18) Check your language options to English
19) Setup your wireless
20) Let it connect
21) Reboot
22) Rep and comment if this did or not work for you. Wink
23) You should be good to go. Enjoy!

Questions:

Yes, you will have to reinstall your apps.
No, you will not lose any stored data such as pictures and MP3s, etc. BUT. BACKUP ANYWAYS!
YES, This made a big difference for me in terms of performance and compatibility. Seems snappier and more responsive now.

If you get a black screen: You may have a different version of the 18GT. Try the kernel here instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s...tcount=263

If you have a black screen. Take it into the darkest possible room, you will see a slight glow from the backlight on it. It's extremely hard to see. Hold the power button until it goes away. That means your unit is off again and you can try reflashing with a different kernel. If I remember right, I had to hold mine for like 45 seconds.

Pimpin'.

so what exactly do the NAND and Model(l?) fixes... "do"? I managed to boot mine without either and at first glance it seems A-OK.

NAND fixes the issue with reading the microSD card and modell fixes the screen size/rotation issue, from what I understood. I never tried it without the fixes.

Apparently if you don't install the NAND fix, you can't read data from the SD card once you reboot to the actual OS.

If you don't install the modell fix, I guess the screen either A) Doesn't rotate or B) Rotates but is always upside down.

So in case anybody else is paying attention - the NAND fix reformats all the internal storage, so blows away any data you may have there.

As for the Modell fix... can't get the damn thing to work. I mean it seems to apply just fine but it doesn't fix the rotation issue (screen doesn't rotate from portrait mode and the "don't rotate" switch doesn't behave correctly).

FYI I had to use the U18GTW8GB model fix in order to get the screen rotation to work.

I haven't done extensive testing yet but the JB ROM discussed above seems to give better compatibility so far.
