It seems to me that Republicans trying to roll back voting eligibility is unprecedented in modern times, but maybe I've just missed when it happened in prior cycles by others. You have any precedence on the other side? |

![]() http://www.ncsl.org/legislatures-...er-id.aspx Ohio §3503.16(B)(1)(a) and 3505.18(A)(1) All voters must provide to election officials at the polling place on the day of an election proof of the voter's identity. Also applies to voters requesting and voting an absentee ballot. As to the first part, where exactly did I say voter id would prevent all voter fraud in my post you quoted?

It appears that the left would be more than happy to have strengthened Voter i.d.laws in Florida.
I thought their goal was to get everyone to vote? The right is simply trying to oblige![]() http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/0...-easy.html Absentee ballot fraud made easy in Miami-Dade Creating a phony voter is relatively easy, but getting him to cast a ballot is almost impossible thanks to voter ID laws. IDs aren’t checked for absentee ballots once a voter makes it on to the rolls. But they are checked at early-voting precincts. "One way to reduce the potential for fraud even further would be to require a witness to sign the absentee ballot along with the voter." I also find it hilarious that Mr. Caputo pointed this out in an article supposed to spark outrage over the likelihood of absentee ballot fraud? ..."experts say, voter fraud is exceedingly rare." I guess this would fall under "Where's the outrage" just like this thread.

IE, instead of setting deadlines and restrictions that apply equally to everyone, they're attempting to set different deadlines and different restrictions that apply differently to certain favored groups (the military) than they do to groups targeted for disenfranchisement (non-whites, college students, working people). I have yet to see anyone attempt to justify Ohio's policy as Constitutional. Instead, its conservative defenders prefer illogical appeals to emotion--"if you want all citizens to have equal voting rights, then you must hate the military." "I do believe that an AK-47, a machine gun, is not a sporting weapon or needed for defense of a home.” -- Ronald Reagan

It couldn't be more clear that Republicans are scheming to disenfranchise legitimate voters, and this case in Ohio is an obvious example.
If you can't win fair and square, then cheat. What's next, randomly moving polling places in all Democrat-leaning areas? Closing polls an hour early in urban areas? Understaffing polling locations in cities? Telling black people they aren't allowed to vote? The voters in Ohio are used to the laws as-is. Obviously, if this change is implemented, it will result in many voters not voting, as perhaps they are accustomed to voting on a Sunday, etc. By exempting service members from the change, the change in the law reduces votes cast in a manner that disproportionately benefits the Republican vote. Because, to Republicans, democracy doesn't matter. Winning does. |
