Cleaning rust stain in toilet

We have hard water - well water, and even with the softening system, we still have issues with iron stains especially in toilets. To compound this, the previous owners didn't take care of things along the way, so the stains are pretty set-in.

we've tried just about everything and this morning I remembered I had some muriatic acid in the shed from a concrete project, so I tried it and it didn't even dent the stain in one toilet (I didn't try it in the other ones).

I was reading this month's issue of Family Handyman which suggested Acid Magic, but this is supposedly the "same strength" as muriatic acid.

Other ideaS?

Super Iron Out. [superironout.com] It's available at Lowe's. It comes in powder form and liquid form.

I have used it on the iron stain in my shower and it works pretty well.

Good old fashioned Lime-A-Way [limeaway.com] didn't help? I always recommend trying this first. Without going super industrial strength, I use that for almost all rust stains, even bad ones.

nope, nada. I tried that first because I had it kicking around but no dice.

My wife uses Pine Sol. She pours it in and lets it sit for a couple hours prior to cleaning. Have you tried using steel wool along with the various cleaners?

I know you can pour vinegar in and let it soak over night and it gets rid of calcium build up. not sure about rust though.

Eat more fiber. And celery.

Did it Fri. I use a sanding sponge & it cost me 42 cents. Use wisely as boy it can take anything off porcelain.
