I personally don't get offended if people use oriental unless they're a younger person. I pretty much just assume older folks just call all asian people orientals. But it's weird when a younger person uses it because the word is so outdated that if you're going out of your way to use it, it seems suspiciously like you're trying to choose a word that's also a slur. So if you're not over 50 I really have to wonder why you'd insist on using it when it's insanely outdated. It's like going around and referring to black people as negroes-even if may not be an all out slur it's bizarre for you to choose something so anachronistic. If you're 95 years old then you can get away with it but if you're 30 you're just being a dick. Last edited by Cirrus; 08-06-2012 at 12:00 AM.. |

ha
Just remember, "oriental" is for objects like an "oriental rug", "asian" is for people, like an "asian gentleman." ![]()

Edit: Only problem with parsing language is where you are from and what you are used to. Living in Hawaii for decades we get used to the lingo. People of Asian ancestry do not refer to themselves as Asian and the word Oriental is interchangeable. We seem to be a lot more sensitive to race baiting in the Mainland and take offense quickly. I truly miss Hawaii where people accept each other and their words without assigning malevolent meanings. No, I am not Asian or Oriental. My best friend of over 20 years is half-Japanese and half Portuguese. Our children's Godmother is half-Filipino and half Portuguese, I have heard them both using the terms interchangeably. My co-workers, drinking buddies, confidants, are full Japanese (one of them is part Okinawan but that's another story referring to "pure" Japanese according to her) - They too use the words interchangeably and there is no stigma with either one. Getting back to the rice cooker: Thanks OP, none here. Going back to California next week and hit a couple of Costco's in the areas - I might get lucky. I am an Asian myself and I don't find it offensive when people call me Asian or Oriental depending on the context. I do find it pathetic when people ask me question like "what's the difference between Korean and Japanese or what's the difference between Chinese and Japanese?". From what i understand "asians" are insulted by the inclusion of indians as "asians" so if true, it goes both ways. If indians are insulted, why is it that my desi friends join groups and clubs that are designated for " asians"? I have never heard them complain about it. And the poor native americans have lost their identity as indians altogether. Last edited by lemontart; 08-08-2012 at 06:36 PM.. ![]() |
