Until the smart phone cameras get really, really good, there will still be a reasonable market for small cameras (as in sub compact--smaller sized compacts) and to me, the 'test' is: "Can it fit in a shirt pocket?"-That's what I really like.
Yea, my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone takes some really nice pictures, but the shutter lags pretty bad, the flash is laughable outdoors and it just doesn't shoot pics the quality of an SD95, SD100 or even my SX 230--- all of which, like the Sony RX100, have those ridiculously terribly placed flashes and no hot shoe for the flash. I don't want a GPS on my camera. Wherever I go, there I am, I figure. I carry a camera a lot more than most people, but I still think that most people are similar to me, in that going out the door, they'd prefer to take the smallest camera that will do as good a job possible, given the camera's size and probable purpose. My Canon Elphs have probably taken more pictures than all my other cameras put together, with this in mind. You can almost forget you're carrying one, pocket or purse. My wife cringes when I grab a DSLR, with battery grip and zoom lens, screaming "Not the paparazzi camera--please no!!" There's no perfect world out there, but if there was, it'd have an Elph sized camera, with a wide angle lens that zooms out to at least 5X, has the flash built into the body and an optical viewfinder, along with a 2.7' or larger LCD/TFT viewfinder that can send pics to my computer wirelessly at the push of a button. There's some Lieca buffs out there, but despite the price, they're not even close to those wish specs.... Damn the flash, but for 'bang for the buck' size and performance, if you need a good small camera, I say wait for the SD100 to hit $250 or less (and it will), grab it and that camera being almost a 'prosumer' level--get it in black, rather than silver! |

Now in retrospect, I would have waited for a NEX w/18-200 instead of a A33 because I would like a smaller camera, but I would not bring it with me more often than I lug around my A33. Last edited by daregan; 08-06-2012 at 10:44 PM.. Please start brain before putting mouth in gear

Is this camera a suitable upgrade from this other Canon I've had for a few months?
