This deal is not that great, frankly. $70 is acceptable for 8GB sticks, but otherwise 1333@1.5V is unremarkable. You could get some Patriot G2's and undervolt and underclock them and get the same price after rebate--maybe slightly less, even.
CAS latency doesn't really matter in real-life situations anymore. Speed still matters slightly, though. You will find a modest improvement going to 1600MHz. One BIG exception: if you are using an integrated GPU in your system, then your RAM speed matters a lot more and 1333MHz is definitely on the slow side. This is one of many articles that back up what I just wrote: http://www.anandtech.com/show/450...-best-ddr3 Another: http://www.tomshardware.com/revie...09-13.html If you're going for efficiency, the best affordable efficient RAM right now is stuff at 1866@1.5v (which you can force down to 1600@1.35v) or 1600@1.35v (which you can easily overclock to 1866@1.5v), but those tend to be 4GB sticks like the Samsungs. If you want to overclock, strangely enough the same types of RAM may be what you want, because you can overvolt a low-voltage RAM stick. Some people really hot-rod the low-voltage Samsungs for instance. But anything over 1600MHz barely helps unless you're using the RAM for integrated graphics. If you have a standalone video card, it has its own, much faster RAM on board the card. If you can wait, you may want to wait till 2x8GB is more common in a few months. But if you need RAM now, this is a decent (lukewarm) deal on what is fast becoming the regular price for 2x8GB 1333MHz. If you must buy now, personally I'd pay $10 extra for 1600MHz@1.5v RAM and either leave it like that or downclock it to 1333MHz@1.35v to save a little electricity (should be worth about $4/year in electricity savings if you leave your PC on 24/7 and pay average U.S. electricity rates; ymmv depending on your exact electrical rates). Just my 2 cents as an experienced system builder. Last edited by goldchocobo; 08-08-2012 at 08:15 AM.. If you liked it then you shoulda put a rep on it!

Not to hijack, but this isn't too bad for some people that can use the 4 sticks, and don't mind waiting for that rebate. 4x4gb patriot g2 1866mhz, $61 AR and code BTENBND35. I see this is 1.65v, listed at times as 1.5v, but I would almost give it a whirl for that price. I found a couple reviews of people using it on non-x79 chipset mobos, but don't know what their voltages were. Hopefully the 2x8gb sticks come down a little, and more are say cas9 @1600 or 1866 mhz and 1.5v. |

Appreciate the info. I was debating whether I should replace my 8GB 1600mhz with this set. I don't really need it, but it's on SD FP ![]() Guess I'll wait a few months and get a faster set for the same price. Maybe by then I'll actually need it, too

Unless you really need 16GB for some reason (i.e. working with ridiculously huge raw photo files in photoshop) you're better off with faster 8GB ram. Just upgraded to those 30nm samsung sticks and they do not disappoint...got a 7.9 in WEI with just dual channel since they're able to run at 2133 lol

Nice RAM kit.

compu illeterate here, please help...
would this chip be good for my old slow Dell Vostro 1500 machine? we do light duty home use with it. currently it has merely "2GB Shared dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667 MHz, 2 DIMM" that came with it originally... is it even worth it to spend $ to put 16GB in... is there a deal to upgrade it to 4GB or 8GB, that may be more appropriate? tia for your help ![]() ![]() ![]() __![]() ![]() __![]() __![]() |
