MAC mini
my college student son wants a mac mini. What's the best deal on this? I know I can get $20 off at the apple store and I think a $100 app card. We were in the Apple store the other day and the genius told us that the keyboard and mouse came with it. However, I just went online and it doesn't appear to be included Now what? That's another at least $100!

Try a refurb from Apple or Cowboom.
If you refer to your husband/wife as 'DH/DW', you're too old to be active on a forum.
If you ask for marriage advice on a(ny) forum, you should seriously reevaluate your life. If you don't know the difference between 'their', 'there', and 'they're', I automatically assume you have a mental disability (same goes for to/two/too and your/you're/yore). |

Which Mac Mini does your son want? The baseline Mini has a somewhat useless integrated Intel graphics chip.
Apple has a refurbished one listed with the more advanced graphics card for $100 less than retail price. It comes with the same warranty as a new model and still qualifies for AppleCare. http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC816LL/A |

What major is your son in? The Mac Mini is really a false economy when you're considering a new computer from scratch. As you mention, you need a keyboard and mouse, which come free with the iMac (although, annoyingly, you get the mini-keyboard, so if your son is an accounting major or any other that constantly uses the number pad, you should sell off the included keyboard and buy yourself the bigger one). Plus, the base iMac comes with a decent graphics card, whereas the base Mini does not; you have to step up to the $780 that's still worse than the base iMac's. The imac also has a webcam built in, and a DVD drive. The imac also has 4 memory slots, so you can upgrade to 16GB RAM for like $65, while the Mac Mini can only be upgraded to 8GB (still respectable, just not as future-proof, and ends up costing about $30). Plus, with the iMac, you get a 21.5" IPS display, which here at slickdeals, would cost you another $230 or more. The advantage of an IPS display is color accuracy and improved viewing angles; if your son does a lot of digital photography or videography, or needs a monitor for his major where color accuracy is paramount, then consider this. If you do already have a keyboard, mouse, and display, and just want to "test drive" a Mac, or if you want to use the Mac mini to run something like a 40" HDTV, I'd just recommend stepping up from the base model and getting the one with a discrete graphics card. It will run larger displays better, especially today when every cellphone has a pretty respectable camera and can film in HD video; when you go to edit you'll notice the difference. If you're just doing basic computing you probably won't, although the one with discrete graphics will again be more future proof. If you don't need the $100 gift card at the Apple store, then you can get $100 off at the Apple refurb store, although it ends up being a wash. |

If every Apple product's price is heavily controlled, and every store from the Apple store itself to Best Buy or Wal-Mart is selling them for about the same price, shouldn't a few alarm bells be going off if there is suddenly some no-name place that is significantly cheaper, even cheaper than used prices on ebay or Craigslist? You've been a slickdealer for 4 years, you should know better than to ask this. Your choices are either to pay retail, or to not buy Apple. And about buying used, make sure you buy a current model if you do. And regardless of what you buy, make sure to buy AppleCare, it pays for itself, especially with the student discount. By the way, I've been thinking about a Mac Mini vs iMac, and it's actually not as clearcut as others and I made it out to be. It really depends what he does with his computer. My desktop is a PC, but my laptop is a Macbook from the beginning of 2009. I still use it fairly often for surfing the web, Office (mainly Excel and Word), and even for a decent amount of Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom work. It still works well for all these tasks, and the graphics card has never held me back. People really overvalue what a graphics card actually does; most people that buy one never use it anywhere near its potential. It's the RAM and processor that are my limiting factors. Even with just a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo and a 9400M integrated graphics card, it does these tasks fine. Graphics is nice to have for certain tasks, but if your son isn't gaming, then Intel 3000 graphics is good enough for him. I haven't run into any issues where my 9400M has held me back. The graphics chip is a non-issue for most non-gamers, unless you do a lot of 3D work, like for engineering programs. http://www.tomshardware.com/news/...15484.html The bottom-end Mac Mini would work for your son just fine, as the processor is noticeably better than mine and the graphics card is a tiny bit better. It turns out that you can upgrade the hard drive in the Mac Mini relatively easy, to add an SSD, and it has a slot for a second hard drive to use the old one as a secondary to hold music, movies, and photos. Look back at older computers, and you'll see that RAM is what ends up being the limiting factor in performance, like the last-gen Mac Minis that could only use 3GB RAM. It turns out that the new Macs can use 8GB per slot, so the Mini can actually use up to 16GB of RAM (while the iMac can then hold 32GB). You can either buy a decent Logitech mouse, or you can buy an Apple one on Craigslist. Add a keyboard, and it's a one time thing. For your next computer, instead of having to buy everything over again, you can just upgrade only the Mini, and you'll have the rest of the peripherals already set up. |
