AMD Radeon HD 6870 with $105 pledge for Defense Grid 2 - Kickstarter

I've been on the verge of pulling the trigger all day. I think I'll just stick with my 7770. The 6870 is faster overall, but I'm thinking the maturing 7770 drivers will close the difference. The 7770 does seem faster for computation.

I have been too, but I pulled the trigger. I'm upgrading from 6670

in for one, thanks OP. Currently on 8800 gts 320mb! And have a Catleap 2560X1440 to drive.. Should probably get a GTX 670, but oh well..

Couldn't resist upgrading from my old 4870. Also, games. Thanks OP.

For those asking about power supply requirements, this review [guru3d.com] shows that the 6870 they tested never pulled more than 141 watts (as measured at the AC line). When AMD specifies a 500-watt power supply, part of that is because they don't know any of the other details of your system. For instance, your CPU could require 125 watts by itself (more, possibly much more, if it's overclocked). Then there's the power consumed by the motherboard, RAM, hard drives, any additional cards, USB peripherals, etc. They also don't know if or how much the manufacturer of your power supply lied when they listed the specs, or how much of those specs are weighted towards 3.3v & 5v rather than 12v (which is what the video cards use).

So, could you get by with a 430-watt power supply? Sure, probably, if there's no overclocking involved. AMD just doesn't want you to come crying to them when you plug in a new video card and your power supply fizzles. So, they say 500 watts and that's a good safe recommendation. Your best bet would be to start by typing "power supply calculator" into Google, choose the one at the top of the list and see what is recommended based on detailed knowledge of your equipment. It still won't guarantee that your existing power supply will handle the load, but it will give you a pretty good idea how close to the edge you'd be pushing it.

Another thing to consider is that many 430-watt power supplies will not have two 6-pin PCIe power connectors. In that case, you'd need to get an adapter cable to convert some other available power connector (usually Molex 4-pin or SATA) to a 6-pin PCIe. Sometimes these adapters come with the video card.

Amazon warehouse has a bunch of used asus overclocked 7770s for $100 right now. FYI. Yeah I know it's used and you don't get their 3-year warranty, but might be worth a try for ppl who missed this and want to upgrade now. It's amazon so it is tax free for some and you can return easily.

If you did the $120 tier, I don't believe you will be getting a video card, per the text at the top of the page.
