Some people are going to buy the new version because it's the new version. Eventually, the new version will get features that aren't in the old version, and that will sway some too. They've already new security features, UI, better optimization et al.

But yeah, lots of people in the know will opt for the older version for free non local access.

So what's the different between Splashtop 1 and Splashtop 2 HD other than Splashtop 2 required this monthly/yearly fee for 3G/4G?

I thought I read that the google service was now defunct, is it still working?
if nobody else is excited, i'll be! I'm trying to figure out how to download it still (incase they pull it, as the android market doesn't allow you to change a free app to a paid app, but maybe it will just be the freemium version as suggested by others), as I only have 2 gingerbread devices (touchpad on cm7 (yes this might be the push to get me to upgrade, but I'd rather wait for cm10!) and republic wireless phone).
Plus, if the apps stays free in the mkt, chances are "free for a limited time" means more than we think *wink*

You are still on CM7 for the TP??? you are missing A LOT and are in for a lengthy wait to get to CM10 since it currently has no audio and FCs left and right. The move to CM9 is pretty seamless and makes it actually feel like a tablet instead of a BIG non-functioning phone. Do a nandroid and take the leap to CM9 (can always go back but you won't want to). It is worth it and very uncomplicated

From what I understand, the original Splashtop HD did not have any encryption when used over 3G/4G which is a big issue. I have it and use it only on my home network for this reason. If they have top of the line encryption on v2, it's worth $9.99 / year in my opinion. That's a big "if" though. Someone smarter than me would have vouch for the encryption algorithms before I was confident in it.

how can you honestly say $9.99/year is reasonable when Splashtop 1 users on iOS got the update for free and $0.00/year? This company's attack on Android is disgusting

I guess I define value by what I get for my money, not by what other people get for the same product on a different platform for their money. I would pay a small fee for something I'd use (encrypted access via internet) and consider it better than a free product that I won't use (unencrypted access via internet). That's regardless of how many people got the better product for free. To each his own.

In term of flexibility, Splashtop 1 allow you to connect using IP address port number. Which means you can use your own encrypted access (your own secure tunnel) if you want. While Splashtop 2, you must login to their server. Which I assume if their server is down, you can't connect to your own Splashtop streamer. And you are limited to use their encryption assuming the connection will always go through their server. And you have no control how you connect to your streamer with Splashtop 2 since you can't specify the IP address/port number of your streamer computer.

I've been using this for about a day and have enjoyed it.
Didn't see it listed elsewhere, saw it listed a while back for Apple products though.
