I actually bought one of these tonight at Walmart and it's just like other externals. I already have a couple WD Mybook drives and the Toshiba acts the same. it comes with preinstalled software for automated backup but all you have to do is plug it in to ur cpu and just hit "open folder" rather than "run". Then you can either delete all the preinstalled software or put it in a folder so it wont try to autorun.
My drive had an actual capacity of 986gb. I did a couple test transfers of 8-10gb MKV files and it worked flawlessly. Just as fast as my AC powered WD Mybooks.
While 12.5mm drives will fit into certain laptops, like my Lenovo W520, I feel its more likely that the drive found inside this external would be the 9.5mm MQ01ABD100 that has been in the process of replacing Toshiba's original 1TB 2,5" drive, the 12.5mm MK1059GSM for some time now. I know neither Amazon nor Newegg still sell the latter, and when this drive is compared to the Canvio it seems quite a bit smaller (though neither the 0.37" for this drive nor the 0.57" listed on Walmart's site could possibly be accurate.)
it's not like you can get scammed by a seller on amazon, not like EBay. Amazon has very strict seller rules, if it's used...full refund, if it's damaged or broken or doa, full refund, if it didnt ship or wrong item, full refund. pretty simple stuff.
