According to the camel, if this price hits, it'll be the lowest price ever offered from Newegg without promo codes or rebates. Great find.

Isn't the 27" kind of the bastard child of Ultrasharp large monitors? I seem to remember that the 30" is better quality, and the 2408 definitely is. I just can't remember WHY. I just know at one time I was going to upgrade my mix of 2408's and a 2405 to 3 2711's and I ended up deciding against it for some kind of quality concern...
Anyone know offhand what might have put me off before? |

There is a brand I've read about called "Catleap" which is placed on 27" 2560 x 1440 IPS monitors which are on Ebay for around $315. They are thought to be possibly the same panels as the Apple Cinema Displays, maybe factory rejects with a dead pixel or something. Reviews are very positive. I've been wanting to get one just because they seem like such a great deal but I really don't need a monitor that size.
If I was in the market for such a display, however, I would strongly consider the Catleap which is about half the price of this Dell, even though it's somewhat of a risk to buy an off brand from an Ebay seller. |

Dell is releasing the U2713 soon, which is probably the reason for this sale. It's not exactly a replacement, however, as the panel and build quality are lower (similar to how the 2412 is a cheaper alternative to the U2410).
I'm personally not a fan of Dell's antiglare coating, so that's another reason for me to pass. |

On another point, if you're someone who would just obsess over a dead pixel or two, unless you're willing to pay extra for a "pixel perfect" guarantee, you're taking a risk. There are also people who claim that the pixel perfect guarantee is a gimmick and they pretty much ship you the same monitor as everyone else. If you happen to get a monitor without defective pixels, they lucked out and pocketed extra cash, and if you did get one with defective pixels, they try to refund you the price difference you paid from the standard listing. I don't know if this practice has changed or not, but there is a notable amount of people who paid extra and still had pixel issues. People claim that it's hard to see a dead/bright pixel on such dense screens, but like I said, if you're obsessive and need things to be perfect, as soon as you spot one and know that it exists, you're going to be conscientious of it and will spot it out more often than you'd like. If you get a monitor with no pixel issues and reasonable backlight bleed, then it's a hell of a deal. It's simply not worth the risk anymore for me, however. I mean, the display was SO CRAP on this Auria that one of the reviewers on overclock.net WENT BACK to a TN panel that had better quality picture. (???!!!) He said he couldn't calibrate the Auria to get a decent picture. Last edited by gaijin4life; 08-10-2012 at 10:49 AM.. |
