They were never 'stars', they were an over hyped marketing ploy that was inflicted on the populace 20 years ago. Definitely won't be watching them.

I never liked them, but they were HUGE worldwide. I can see why the Olympic committee wanted them. Besides Adele and maybe Winehouse, what British artist has been bigger in recent yrs? Coldplay maybe too.

I meant in recent years. Of course, U2 is HUGE. Elton John and the Beatles are part of music history.

In the GB, they are instantly recognized. But good point, James Blunt has more earning power and hits in the UK than Stone. Are they eternal singers? Probably not. Would Elton John do it? I dunno, he seems to like to do history making events these days. Would the Rolling Stones do it? I dunno, but after their gig in the Super Bowl....pass.

Zepplin? Leppard? The Who? Tears for Fears? Duran Duran? I hear they are all available but do we really want to hear them close out the Olympics? Debatable.

LOL....I know there are much better and more influential artists from the UK out there. But, it doesn't belie the fact that the Spice Girls are/were extremely popular worldwide. Don't ask me why?!?!?!?

No, no you're right but as one-hit wonders have proven (not talking the Spice Girls but in general)...bigger does not always mean better.
