Battery replacement for Nook Simple Touch?

Wasser 2,442 August 12, 2012 at 02:44 PM
Does anyone have a source for a replacement battery for a Nook ST?

It is a 3.7V 1530mAh battery, here [techrepublic.com] is a picture.

Coming up empty on the usual sites (ebay, Amz, chinese dudes).

Gracias!

Sooo... these must be just throw-away devices. That's too bad.

Does anyone know if the Kindle batteries can be rigged to fit into the Nook? They have the same specs, but different connectors (and potentially different size).

What is the model number on the Nook? I am looking at a few, but I think they are for the old normal ereaders.

Mine is the BNRV-300. I saw some for the older "regular" nooks too... they even have instructions how to get the back off them on the B&N website.

Not sure if they use the same batteries. I saw some that are missing the connector/wires so those most likely won't work.

As I found, kind of amazed that these don't exist in any obvious place. You may be able to find something with the same specs and wire it in, but I wonder if it would work. Most of these batteries have some electronics built in which may confuse the issue if you swap models.

I wasn't able to find one anywhere either and I was looking at electronics parts suppliers. It's surprising how few li-po batteries the big parts companies sell. Ultimately, you may have to measure the battery very precisely and determine the connector's pin out in order to replace it, even then it may pretty difficult.

I would expect that over time as the demand increases, a replacement battery for the nook simple touch will become easier to find. I doubt too many people have had the battery fail inside of a year, unless they're being extremely hard on the battery.

Thanks for your help guys.

I got the NST about a year back refurbed. Used it infrequently, and it got to a low charge a few times, which doesn't help with these batteries. Recently I have been using it extensively and noticed that it goes to 10% too fast (couple of days rather than couple of weeks). Not terrible yet, but perhaps a sign that the battery is on its last leg.

Will probably get a cheap second NST as a backup soon.

You could always try contacting B&N, maybe they'd sell you a battery.

Thanks for the idea... I did call, and they suggested to send me a replacement unit. Works for me I guess... Hopefully they won't mind that I opened up the unit. I guess somehow I need to restore it to non-rooted status too. Lol.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO OPEN ANY OF THE FOLLOWING NOOKS TO TRY TO REPLACE THE BATTERY:

SIMPLE TOUCH
SIMPLE TOUCH WITH GLOW LIGHT
NOOK COLOR
NOOK TABLET 16G
NOOK TABLET 8G

None of the batteries in these devices is replaceable, and attempting to open them will damage the cases, and could void the warranty on the devices. If you are having problems with the battery holding a charge, call the 800 number for assistance.

I have always had trouble following instructions and rules. Stick Out Tongue

The NST is easy to open, just one screw behind the power tab, shift, pry open. Does not damage the case at all, unless you try prying with a sledge hammer, of course.

The battery is just a stink normal 3.7V lithium battery, plugged in with a rather common battery connector. Changing it would take as much effort as changing the battery in your cordless phone.

I would have been happy to buy a replacement battery and change it myself, but apparently, since they are not replaceable, I need to get a brand new unit. Sigh.

Batteries have a certain life span. Maybe one year, maybe two or even three. Saying they are not replaceable is building planned obsolescence. Boo. I want to read my books on this device 10 years from now if the screen is still good. Perhaps I am nuts.

Did you find a battery? My screen died on mine, and so i broke it open and took out the battery. It was barely used, as this was my second, backup Nook to my Nook color. It's available if you'd like to buy it...,
