Existing Monthly 4G Customers cannot get the deal - however they can activate the new phone and should be able to call in to transfer their previous account info into the new account.

I'll be answering questions here (also on the page linked below). Walmart does have these, look at the photos on the page. Ask someone competent in the Walmart Connection Center and ask if they have them in stock. They got the update on their computers last week (8/6/2012) on the deal and how it works. Stores received them between August 8th through the 13th - some earlier.

Adding this to clear up questions
There seems to be a lot of incorrect assumptions on here as well as a lot of misinformation being given. Let me clarify everything. Also, it would be worth reading the info listed in the source.

This deal works ONLY at Walmart stores in the Connection Center. Stores should have received them and should have the info tags posted next to their Walmart Family Mobile display. There are no additional discounts or rebates available on this. The Galaxy S II is $570 outright, so you are effectively getting this phone for $270 off already.

There are two separate ways to attain the Galaxy S II for $299 in store:
¤ Activate a Walmart Family Mobile account. This will require a $25 activation kit, which includes your WFM SIM card. For more info on that, view the source. Existing customers of WFM should be able to get this deal after confirming their account.

¤ Buy the Prepaid variant - aka, the T-Mobile Monthly 4G Branded Box. This includes the Prepaid SIM card in the box, which they will activate for you. You must get a monthly plan valued at $30 and up.

Not all stores have these phones yet, but that has to do with their ordering system and their competence.

Unlock

How to unlock this phone:

Call T-mobile (must speak to the Pre-paid department) and request an unlock code. If purchased at this price point, you will not be able to get an unlock code by faxing in a receipt if you have not had your account active for a minimum of 60 days. Once you have had a minimum of 60 days service AND load your account with a minimum of $10, submit your request and expect a response with the code via email in just a day or two. Alternatively, instead of loading your account with money you can not have refunded, simply pay for your third month of service and you will be become eligible for an unlock code. (If you try to circumvent these rules you will likely just run into HUGE headaches, T-mobile pre-paid customer service is TERRIBLE).

Memory

Strange. This is a T989 phone that shows only 768MB RAM and 12GB ROM, unlike the identified characteristics of 1GB/16GB. Not sure what to make of it.

Does not work on ATT
DOES NOT work with ATT prepaid data. Does not work at all, no 3G or 2G speed, nothing absolutely. If you are buying for that purpose, please dont waste your money. On the other hand, perhaps ATT customers may want to migrate/port their number to T-Mobile and use this awesome phone on their $50 monthly plan. Thats what I am going to do. F* ATT.
--thelatest2008
-- How can that be? Isn't this a 2G/3G/HSPA+ phone with both ATT & Tmo antennas/network stacks? Do you mean that the T989 is locked to Tmo, so you just have to buy an unlock code or wait for Tmo to unlock it?
-- Does the T989 have the same radio/network stack as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus?

With Apple winning the verdict in court won't these phones get blown off the shelf? I thought this might be a good deal a month ago but today I can't say it's a good deal now. T-mobile.com has been selling (check daily deal) the s2 for free with classic plan and only charges $200 to migrate to value plan just as an FYI.

If you're looking for a car mount , the Samsung Infuse 4G mount works perfectly for both SII and SIII ( I have both phones )

http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/...90308.html

For some reason, this does not fit my S2. Does not clip into place - might just be faulty, but it's going back.

It took some acrobatic talent to get it fit in, but didn't feel safe. Moreover, the mount didn't charge the SII with the original charger as well as a high-amp (HP TouchPad 2.0 A) charger.

What is the walmart price protection policy? I still cannot justify paying $300 for almost 2 year old out-dated phone. I am guessing the price on this will drop very soon, I know we can return the phone (although I am not sure if walmart is charging restocking fee on phones) but it would be very nice if they had price protection like 90 days or something.

Any ideas? Otherwise I rather pay $520 and get S3 unlocked from Buy.com or $550 from T-Mobile.

Thanks for this thread and I have read most of it. But, I am still confused, are the specs for either the $299 Family Mobile or the $329 TMobile phone with $30 card the same as the specs for the official t989 from TMobile or are we getting a stripped down version with less memory and less internal storage from Walmart?

Thanks.

The Walmart Family Mobile phone IS the T-Mobile phone in the box. The specs are the same. I'm pretty sure these are overstock that WFM bought from T-Mobile. It wouldn't make any financial sense to have another phone manufactured at this point.

I bought the T-Mobile pre-paid version from WalMart for a family member. It's the same phone - not stripped down. Earbuds/mic aren't included. Not sure if they are included with the T-Mobile post paid version.

What to do with the $30 gift card? I sold mine on Ebay for less than the face value - (I think $25) and e-mailed the code. For TMO value plan customers that prefer Android, the SGS II or Nexus 4 (direct from Google Play) are the best choices to reduce cost. The Nexus doesn't support Wi-fi calling, the T-Mobile branded SGS II does support wi-fi calling.

Thinking about picking up this phone from Walmart and maybe bringing it with me on my European trip next month.

Has anybody tried to unlock this phone successfully using the method described here by "f_v_man"?

Walmart is offering a free Bonus Starter Kit included in the price of 329.99. Helps offset a little of the prepaid card cost.

This phone should really be much cheaper now, like $200 is the fair price for this phone, and honestly GS3 should go down to $400-$450.
I got Galaxy Exhibit 4G for $130 from HSN, and it has the same screen resolution as GS2 only smaller, so you get a much sharper image, the screen resolution of GS2 is really bad because the screen is so large.
