Existing Monthly 4G Customers cannot get the deal - however they can activate the new phone and should be able to call in to transfer their previous account info into the new account.

I'll be answering questions here (also on the page linked below). Walmart does have these, look at the photos on the page. Ask someone competent in the Walmart Connection Center and ask if they have them in stock. They got the update on their computers last week (8/6/2012) on the deal and how it works. Stores received them between August 8th through the 13th - some earlier.

Adding this to clear up questions
There seems to be a lot of incorrect assumptions on here as well as a lot of misinformation being given. Let me clarify everything. Also, it would be worth reading the info listed in the source.

This deal works ONLY at Walmart stores in the Connection Center. Stores should have received them and should have the info tags posted next to their Walmart Family Mobile display. There are no additional discounts or rebates available on this. The Galaxy S II is $570 outright, so you are effectively getting this phone for $270 off already.

There are two separate ways to attain the Galaxy S II for $299 in store:
¤ Activate a Walmart Family Mobile account. This will require a $25 activation kit, which includes your WFM SIM card. For more info on that, view the source. Existing customers of WFM should be able to get this deal after confirming their account.

¤ Buy the Prepaid variant - aka, the T-Mobile Monthly 4G Branded Box. This includes the Prepaid SIM card in the box, which they will activate for you. You must get a monthly plan valued at $30 and up.

Not all stores have these phones yet, but that has to do with their ordering system and their competence.

Unlock

How to unlock this phone:

Call T-mobile (must speak to the Pre-paid department) and request an unlock code. If purchased at this price point, you will not be able to get an unlock code by faxing in a receipt if you have not had your account active for a minimum of 60 days. Once you have had a minimum of 60 days service AND load your account with a minimum of $10, submit your request and expect a response with the code via email in just a day or two. Alternatively, instead of loading your account with money you can not have refunded, simply pay for your third month of service and you will be become eligible for an unlock code. (If you try to circumvent these rules you will likely just run into HUGE headaches, T-mobile pre-paid customer service is TERRIBLE).

Memory

Strange. This is a T989 phone that shows only 768MB RAM and 12GB ROM, unlike the identified characteristics of 1GB/16GB. Not sure what to make of it.

Does not work on ATT
DOES NOT work with ATT prepaid data. Does not work at all, no 3G or 2G speed, nothing absolutely. If you are buying for that purpose, please dont waste your money. On the other hand, perhaps ATT customers may want to migrate/port their number to T-Mobile and use this awesome phone on their $50 monthly plan. Thats what I am going to do. F* ATT.
--thelatest2008
-- How can that be? Isn't this a 2G/3G/HSPA+ phone with both ATT & Tmo antennas/network stacks? Do you mean that the T989 is locked to Tmo, so you just have to buy an unlock code or wait for Tmo to unlock it?
-- Does the T989 have the same radio/network stack as the Samsung Galaxy Nexus?

With Apple winning the verdict in court won't these phones get blown off the shelf? I thought this might be a good deal a month ago but today I can't say it's a good deal now. T-mobile.com has been selling (check daily deal) the s2 for free with classic plan and only charges $200 to migrate to value plan just as an FYI.

If you're looking for a car mount , the Samsung Infuse 4G mount works perfectly for both SII and SIII ( I have both phones )

http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/...90308.html

For some reason, this does not fit my S2. Does not clip into place - might just be faulty, but it's going back.

It took some acrobatic talent to get it fit in, but didn't feel safe. Moreover, the mount didn't charge the SII with the original charger as well as a high-amp (HP TouchPad 2.0 A) charger.

Doesn't Google Voice make that distinction kinda silly?
If you can get WiFi calling working with Google Voice and 3rd party apps, then sure it doesn't matter. But the person I was replying to was talking about T-Mobile Wifi calling only

So I'm in Walmart purchasing the s2. $299, and the guy didn't make me get a sim kit, prepaid card, or anything. I have 14 days to return it, so ill get it and see how it goes.

So you dont need to sign up any plan with them? Does the phone work if you put in your current Tmobile SIM? Or does the phone need to activate by them in order to work?

that doesn't work with the t989 only the i9100 (international version).

T-mobile will unlock this for free since you bought it outright...

Well that's new. But I did have the chance to test an XDA dev's port of the nightly and RC on my phone. No one could hear me and the cell reception was horrible.
I have the T989. There is an option in the phone settings to fix that. I usually use Bluetooth to talk so it's a non issue for me. BTW, the bluetooth is through my cars system, I'm not "That guy" who wanders around with his bluetooth headset on all day.

With a few tweaks this is an awesome, top of the line phone. Currently running CM9, there is official CM support on the phone.

i don't see why everyone makes such a big deal with having the most recent updates ASAP. i flashed my gs2 to ICS and found the UI more confusing. even worse, the phone ran slower and burned more battery power. i read about the new features and there's nothing really that great (at least for me).

so 2 days later i flashed back to gingerbread where i'm getting great battery life and faster speeds.
Was it the official update? Although you bring up a good point in favor of only getting nexus phones, google will make sure the update works properly and typically you end up with a faster handset while the manf. released updates often bring a host of problems from their UI skinning or just poor porting.

I've been using android since 1.6 and assuming you are getting the official google updates (ie you've been using ADP/Nexus phones the whole time) every update has provided some kind of speed increase. That being said I haven't always had an ADP/Nexus device and because of that I've had to deal with the hassle of ROM changes so I get where you are coming from.

i downloaded a custom ROM. one of the most popular ones for my model.

stock ICS will still burn more juice on my phone, which is a dealbreaker for me. i can't imagine my phone being any faster than it currently is anyways (unnamed ROM for sgs2 i777).

To answer this question once and for all. YES!!! You can use a postpaid/prepaid T-mo sim in this phone. This phone will also take Simple Mobile or Strait Talk T-mo sim. The only time you have to unlock it is if you are trying to use it on AT&T. So yes it will work your current T-mo sim.

I think that you just made a strong point in favor of the GNEX. If you flashed it and your phone performance got worse then you either 1. Installed a bad rom or 2. The GS2 is not ready for ICS. I also find it counter intuitive that somebody would favor an outdated version of Android over the latest version. I thought that the updates on ICS were great but after running Jelly bean I can't imagine going back to ICS let alone Gingerbread. Find yourself a phone (like the Nexus) that is running a stable version of ICS (or better yet Jelly Bean) and you opinion will take a 180 degree turn.

I got in on one of the HSN cheapo Galaxy Exhibit II phones for $130 and upgraded it to ICS CM9. It seems plenty fast to me. What am I missing?
