Toshiba Portege and Tecra have comparable or better build quality... although I must admit that z830 is a step down from their usual. Tecras are built like bricks, you can kill people with them if you want to.

Wait for Retina. It's not only about the display, but the rest of the hardware should be better.
As far rendering goes, the issues are rare, are getting addressed right now.

XPS13 has two models, one I had was an i5 equivalant to the i5 MBA models.

x220? search ebay you find them all over the place for half the price you mentioned, though what I have indeed is more expensive, there are plenty i7s for way cheaper.

Is the trackpad really as good as the macbook air? I believe the display part easily but I have never used a trackpad like the one apple currently has. It alone is what keeps me using apple (along with the multitouch gestures). I would be fine owning a PC for a desktop but in all honesty Apple really does outclass everything else I have tried when it comes to laptops.

Unfortunatly I don't have a hands on experience to share. I have a guy that works for me that is seriously jonesing for one of these.
