is OTG functionality provided in OS software, or would it require specific hardware? I have a mytouch4g, so relatively old hardware, but I can flash latest roms.
OTG function involves both hardware and software. Normally, upon connection, the OTG software can negotiate to determine which end will become Host and which one will be device.
In practice, a lot of software implementations can take the easy way out forcing Device only support. One of the main reasons for lack of Host support is the Power Issue. Host should be able to supply power if the device insists on it as in the case of a Flash device which has no power of its own. To simplify the circuit, it is possible for the OTG hardware to be designed without power support. (Of course, you can use powered Hubs to circumvent this). In any case, you need Software support to fully support OTG Host functionality
I've used with GNex, Nex7, and GS3. All worked fine. I used [root] StickMount[google.com] from the Play store (gotta be rooted). It auto-mounts when you plug in the thumb drive much like you would expect when plugging in to a PC.
Does an 'OTG' adapter do something different than just a microUSB to USB adapter?
(DOAH! yeah, what the guy above me said...! Fine, so I'll search for it all on my own... )
