Plextor 128GB SSD PX-128M5S $99.99+FS!!

Awesome drive! But I think I'll wait for it to at least hit $89.99, since the Samsung and Vertex 4 drives have already done so (or gone lower in some cases).

If it's the same as my last plextor ssd, then this has a 5 year warranty. Much higher than the rest of the industry.

Yep waiting for the 89.99 price. Now if this and the M3 Pro was on sale at the same price what would you guys get? This is the M5? Are M3 still in?

Good question. I'd just assumed that this M5S was just a price competitive addition to the M3S and M3P, but I just found out the M5P has been released... anyway, this M5S has 3 year warranty vs 5 years for the M3S, M3P and M5P.

- I haven't found information on the PX-128M5P yet, the 256GB version speeds may benefit from size vs the 128GB.

sorry I'm dumb... why would people go for these SSD when the write speed's so much lower than other deals like the Transcend 128gb SSD which can go up to 560m/s.

I'll give it a shot.

Plextor has an enviable reputation for quality and reliability from their days as the manufacturer of CD-Rom drives generally recognized as by far the best available. That carried over to the early DVD-R/W drives. (eventually price pressure forced everybody to ship what I call "commodity drives" - one is about the same as another for most uses...)

So, here they are with solid state drives that seem to be of the same quality as the products that built their reputation.

It's not hard to find a Sandforce or other drive with faster sequential write speeds, but it turns out that the one specification that best predicts typical user experience isn't sequential writes, but "random 4K IOPS (reads & writes)" and the Plextors do very well at that.

So, before you emphasize Sequential Writes in your SSD selection, just be sure that's something that will actually make a difference for your typical use. You only load Windows once, most people aren't copying large files back and forth most of the time.

I know that if the data is something that I might actually need to read back at some point, I'd much rather have it stored on a Plextor drive.

TL;DR? *Reliability* and they're fast where you'll actually notice.

It seems to be pretty comparable to the "yardstick" of SSD reliability and performance, the Samsung 830 based on this benchmark comparison [anandtech.com]. The Samsung has an edge in the writes, the Plextor in the reads. I would call it a tie overall.

However, the Samsung can be had for $10 less for this size, so I'm not sure that this is exactly a great price. I would also advise waiting for the $90 mark on this drive based on other prices that have been popping up over the last couple of weeks.

On a side note, if anyone finds a M5P for this price, I'm in for 3!

Plexor M3P, M3S and M5S use the old Marvel controller. The only difference between the M3S and M3P is the firmware. The M5S is the same as the M3S but uses either cheaper ram or less spare ram.

The M5P uses the new Marvel Controller and one of the first one out on the market.

Yea I'm with you on the M5P, good thing I didn't hop on the M3S or M3P (if any) deals since these were coming out. Is Samsung due for a new SSD release or are they doing fine with 830?
