Has anyone cancelled their comcast phone then used the same number for GV after porting? If so how long does it take after cancelling comcast can your port your number over?

If it is anything like cell phone porting, once you cancel on the provider's side (say, Verizon for example) then your number vanishes. You need to initiate the port on the other side (Google) before cancelling the old service (Comcast). Again, this is how cell phones work - I have no land-line experience.

GV will only allow you to port in cell phone numbers not landlines at this time. If the number is still active, you could port it to another voip provider with relative ease. To get it into GV you might have to port it to a cell carrier and then to GV, which may not be worth it. There's no guarantee that GV calls will continue to be free forever.

You always have to initiate the port before you cancel no matter what type of phone service you're dealing with. I recently had to explain this to someone who's had the same phone number for over 60 years, who thankfully hadn't canceled their service yet. If you really want the phone number enough, you might be able to call comcast give them some sob story and get the number back with them for a decent fee and turn around and port the number a month later.

Here is the number porting guideline from FCC. It took about 3 weeks for the paper work to go through in my case (land-line to ooma voip). Just remember once you terminate the service, the phone number is no longer yours.

Ok so I can't port the number to a tmobile sim and then port to google voice? As soon as I cancel comcast the number w vanish even after ive ported it?
