Verizon Upgrade

Is it possible to upgrade my phone using the subsidized price of the new phone AND still keep my plan?
Currently have 1400 min with unlimited data w Verizon.

you would need to call verizon the new plan really sucks if you have some non-smart phones on your plan

No, if your on a consumer account. You would have to buy the phone on full price (or bring your own and just activate it) to keep your unlimited data. business accounts still can keep the old plans.

No. Subsidized pricing is for a new phone and one of their new data plans only. So if you have unlimited then you can keep it AND your old phone but by agreeing to subsidized phones you agree to a plan that fits those phones and that is not their legacy unlimited plan.

But you can pay full price for the phone and keep the unlimited data right? Im due for an upgrade and I really don't want to lose my unlimited data plan.

Yes heres how...sorta. Verizon CS will verify this as accurate too.


Say you have the iphone 4s and want the new iphone5 when it comes out but dont want to renew your contract to lose the unlim data.

1. add a new line to your contract with the new phone you want
2. switch the phone numbers so the new phone has your old number.
3. pay etf of 350 to cancel the new line
4. sell old iphone for 250-300 to cover costs of etf.
5.
6. profit!


edit: this is much cheaper than paying the full $600-$800 for the new phone full price, and you keep your data plan.

Correct so if you have somewhere along the lines of $300-800 then you can keep the same plan I believe.

So this means for any upgrade for smartphone, ie: iphone4 > iphone 5, I can't just lock in an iphone5 for say 199 for a 2 year contract like you used to be able to anymore to keep an old plan? The only way to keep an old grandfathered in unlimited data plan is to basically pay the full price of the phone?

Yes. You can not renew your contract and keep your unlimited data anymore...so either pay full price for phone, buy one from ebay used, keep old phone, whatever, but dont renew it because it will be gone.

If I purchase a new phone from say craigslist...can I activate it and keep my unlimited data plan?

As long as you don't renew your contract. Which they usually get that by a new phone discount. So, if you aren't buying your phone from them directly, or buy from them at full retail, you are good.
