Didn't even know it existed. But believe me, knowing the current state of affairs and the amount of subterfuge needed, this site will pop up under another name in another country within a year.

I don't know how all of this works. What's the difference between downloading a torrent and downloading from a news group?

Torrents are P2P distribution, as you're getting the file from various computers, you're also sending it to other computers. With newsgroups you're just downloading.

Is one safer than the other?

Newsgroups are much, much safer. That's why you don't talk about them. Nobody actually gets sued for downloading, it's the inherent re-uploading that comes along with P2P that gets people in trouble and sued.

In theory, newsgroups are safer. One point of contact (newsgroup provider) rather that multiple points of contact (seeders). Plus it is harder for a copyright holder to host its own contact with a newsgroup. But you didn't hear that from me.

Also with torrent downloading, you may be downloading (leecher) the bits of the file(s) from multiple users that are sharing the torrent (seeders) and once all of those bits of the files are put together, voila, the intended file you wanted to download. The beauty being that you can have several hundred people to leech off of and get the download quick. Newsgroups are more of a standard upload/download method but fall under the same scrutiny of virus as any other upload/download. Though these users typically keep each other safe and why it is so safe.
