How this has managed to stay this quiet is beyond me. You know that ALL the manufacturers are scrambling to make machines, predominantly laptops with touch capability, and the mere fact that it's a couple of months away and not even a whisper of what to expect, indicates to me that they are coming out with a bang. Bear in mind that I'm probably a much better technician than a Nostradamus, but it sure does seem to me that something huge is around the corner. |

Absolutely it's all very hush hush...they want to take the world by storm and create a feverent buzz again like they did with 95 and XP. This is going to be fun to watch... I might actually build a new computer with touch one day...and be sporting a surface tablet too. Its the buzz just around the corner. Last edited by boltman2007; 08-18-2012 at 12:20 PM.. |

Wait for Windows 9 instead if you want to pass up on Windows 8. Most corp companies are still on Windows XP and have skipped Windows Vista, Windows 7 and looks like Windows 8 going to get skipped. Best if you want 8 to get a touch-screen PC all-in-one are not cheap.
When I ask for a tablet they shouldn't tell me to go into the pharmacy to get one!

Yeah you could wait.. I am staying with Windows 7 since everything I have here on my 38 nodes network supports Windows 7. Added Windows 8 and Network Media Streamers from SONY don't see the Windows 8 Tablet. So I had gone back with Windows 7 U64.. Windows 9 was suppose to introduce 128-bit. We don't have enough apps to support 64-bit 100% yet. |

Why do you keep calling it Metro? It's not Metro. Don't [time.com] you [networkworld.com] read [techlife.net] up [wmpoweruser.com] on [arstechnica.com] Windows [theverge.com] 8 [infoworld.com]? Or is everything hush hush hush hush till October?
I'll praise Windows when MS implements retinal tracking so that I can navigate the GUI without a mouse. Oh, and a DB based FS. |

You'll always need to use a mouse or your index finger could replace the it.. Technology is changing.. TS tracking needs to be more 100% than it is. Windows 8 Metro was the first name MS called 8. Now they're changing the name again. I have forum based on WMT Windows Metro Table Zone. I'll have to change the name again. Crazy.. MS should just keep it at Metro sounds better to me. |

I understand.... but don't knock it until you try it. It is much more responsive than Windows 7 and actually saves you time. This OS makes you more productive. I'm running mine off a virtual hard drive (VHD) and if flat out flies. I wasn't sold at CP or RP stage... RTM is a whole different animal. I love it. The windows 8-UI just makes everything more polished... for instance opening a PDF file displays it edge to edge with no title bars or anything in your way.... Same with websites opened in the "metro" IE10. Windows 8 gets out of your way so you see more and do more. The Windows 8 UI is perfect for a quick check of e-mail, weather, news, sports, social etc. Then you move over to a traditional speedy desktop. Its so good I ditched Chrome as it seemed clunky in comparison to IE10. I fly around the system instantly switching from mode to mode. When I go to my windows 7 desktop I find myself looking to switch to the new UI but can't. Its seamless. Little things like the Windows Explorer Ribbon are awesome too. I guess if you want a slower less capable OS then stick with Windows 7.... I have a feeling that most everyone will want to switch at some point after its out. I'm just giving you all a heads up. It's great. Last edited by boltman2007; 08-19-2012 at 09:47 AM.. |

Even you do not like the Metro UI, I do not believe there is a reason to purposely avoid Windows 8.
Reason is that the open-source Classic Shell will give you an old-style XP Start Menu. Somebody even made a skin so Classic Shell gives you a Window 7 style Start Menu. And no, Class Shell is not an overhaul of Windows that makes it unstable. It just gives you a start menu in desktop though you can also add it to the the file manager if you choose that option. It even "boots" to desktop if you want. Hence, the excuse of too hard to use or whatever should not be applicable anymore if you just want to use Windows 8 for a desktop computer. |
