Best method/Mount to use cell phone as Dash Cam?

jbloggs 9,583 4,487 August 17, 2012 at 03:06 PM
Just little background first. A family member was involved in an accident where the other driver was at fault as he ran a red light, but he lied to the police and to the insurance company, the police were not interested even though witness who stopped to help and also informed the police if they needed a statement but the police said it was not necessary Confused, there were many cars that were blocked due the accident and none of the police made any attempt to question any of the drivers but instead guided them around the accident . Luckily I was called from the witness' cell phone and over a few weeks managed to get the other persons insurance company to admit full liability.

So I was thinking that since the cell phone has a pretty good camera why not make it into a dash cam to record a journey from start to destination and then just erase the video when you safely reach the destination. With that in mind what would be the best method and mount to use for such a purpose?

you should look for a dedicated dashcam that will start recording as soon as it is turned on (hopefully your car has a ciglighter that turns on/off with the vehicle) and overwrite the memory card once its full. The phone is idea is just not practical, and the one time you forget/lazy to turn it on will be the time you need it...

Just use a regular mount and make sure the camera isnt blocked. I would suggest android or iphone as they have apps that will record around 1 hour of it and then record over the 1 hour later on.

Though a Dashcam isnt that expensive either. U can get a decent one for $50...

ive seen some mounts that just drop into the mount, but i would definately suggest something to charge the phone while recording...

I found the following Android apps that I'll look into

DailyRoads Voyager - Link [google.com]

AutoBoy BlackBox - Link [google.com]

You will be surprised on what you catch sometimes... I caught my entire felony arrest on my cam... you can see my shadows on the wall with the cop's spot light...

I do suggest spending a bit more money and get one with GPS in it, that way, you can use it to track where you are and such in case u get pulled over for speeding... I assume i can have someone do the math on how fast im going using the driving lanes, but i dunno if that will prove anything...

My Navigon iPhone app has a tracker on it, so im could use that... i dont think there is an app that will just do that...
