Does anyone else see the problem with only supporting democracies that make choices we like?
It's unclear where anybody ever got the idea that a free market results in low prices when the entire point of capitalism is to maximize profit and low prices are less profitable. Therefore the natural proclivity should be to collude and fix prices at the highest sustainable point.
Oh, it's illegal to collude and fix prices and whatnot as deemed by the gubmint? Who are they to say how a free market should work when it's a matter of divinity per Adam Smith whose book nobody bothered to read? |

You can support democracy, without supporting any particular instance or variation of it. For example you might not support the white supremacist black slave instance of democracy. Whilst still being a promoter of democracy. Likewise, you might not support the Muslim supremacist Shariah Law instance of democracy. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI...detailpage Science is much more than a body of knowledge. It is a way of thinking. This is central to its success. Science invites us to let the facts in, even when they don’t conform to our preconceptions.

-- I suppose a certain argument can be made that relatively speaking the US was a better place to be than many others if one was male and white (and christian, etc). However that had mostly to do with the abundant natural resources of one of the last remaining frontiers on earth (ie sheer luck of geography). One of our greatest advantages is still the cheap land, etc, even if most all of it worth owning is already owned. Last edited by agent00f; 08-26-2012 at 01:35 AM.. |

1) The American "exceptionalism" that you talk about was limited to moneyed males of the white Caucasian persuasion for decades after independence and later to moneyed females of the white Caucasian persuasion. It wasn't until more than 150 years after independence that all citizens of all persuasions (except those of the homosexual persuasion and certain other persuasions) could enjoy all the benefits of the exceptionalism. 2) In the past 50 years, many parts of the world have not only achieved the same American exceptionalism but have even surpassed it in terms of the freedoms and protection from tyranny enjoyed by their citizens, especially in the past decade. It could be shown that certain parts of Europe have far more freedom and protection from tyrannical government than the United States. For example, they don't allow warrantless wiretapping, extraordinary rendition, "enemy combatants", Guantanamo, etc. 3) The original inhabitants of the United States (i.e. the Native Americans, the aboriginals) can testify under oath that the U.S. government was no different than the 18th century British Crown or the Stalinist regime of the Soviet Union. 4) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIOPw0Ewj4Q Last edited by kharvel; 08-26-2012 at 03:57 AM..
