Need info on credit card charge on returned product

Why in the world would the manufacture issue you a refund on your credit card when you bought the item on ebay?

I used PayPal to purchase the item so the charge went on my credit card as its attached to my PayPal account. When calling the manufacture/seller on eBay about the broken item I was told I would receive a full refund on my credit card when I sent the broken part back.

The seller received the item back on June 31 and you still don't have a credit on your credit card on August 18? That's entirely too long. Contact the seller in writing and ask them why the funds haven't been credited to your credit card yet but first check your credit card again to make sure it didn't post after the current statement was issued.

Edit: If seller responds that they will credit the funds, give them one week before filing a dispute with your credit card company (that's enough time for it to show up) . If they give you some BS story or don't respond, file immediately. When I have a Paypal dispute, I always go directly to my credit card issuer, I don't like messing around with Paypal when it comes to a dispute.

Thanks for pointing out the 31st in June mistake, I as I do in most times messed up on the date. Its was July the 31st that the package was received back to the seller. Given the corrected date how long should I wait for the credit to show up on my credit card for the returned purchased item. Also can I dispute the charges after I've paid of the credit card or do I have to dispute the charges before the bill is due on 9/15/12. I know this may seem like dense questions but I've never had this sort of problem before and don't know anything about dealing with it.

If I were you I would call the credit card company and explain you wish to dispute the charges since the product was defective and the supplier said they were issuing a credit.
I believe- though I am not sure- that puts the amount in suspense giving the supplier a chance to issue the refund and you not having to pay for it and then get a refund from the credit card company.
But then again I have never run into this and I could be all wrong so my best suggestion to you would be to call CS from your CC company- explain the situation- and get their advise.
CC companies have CS reps answering phones 7 days per week so you can get your answer by tomorrow.

Since seller received the item on 7/31, that means it's been almost weeks. That's also too long. I would contact them in writing (perhaps through Ebay's "contact seller") and ask them what's the status of your credit as it has not yet posted to your credit card. You have plenty of time to file a dispute with your credit card before 9/15 if necessary.

While you're waiting to hear back from the seller, find out how to file a dispute with your card issuer just in case that becomes necessary. All of my cards have an online dispute link so I can just click on that link, file my dispute, and the charge is suspended immediately. Calling the credit card issuer now wouldn't suspend the payment as the only thing that will suspend payment in this case is the actual filing of a dispute and that's a little premature at this point.

To answer your last question, yes, you can definitely get your money back if you pay a credit card bill then file a dispute and win. I had a $2500.00 charge that I paid on the due date. A few weeks later, I filed a dispute and won. My credit card issuer credited my account, and I called and requested that they send me a check for the $2500 which they did.

Edit: Since it's been almost three weeks, I wouldn't be patient with seller. I would give them two days tops to respond before filing a dispute. I recommend contacting them in writing first because in disputes that I've filed, my credit card issuer likes to see that I tried to resolve the issue. It looks good that you have proof that seller said they would issue a refund, proof of delivery, proof that you gave seller time to issue the credit and for it to post, then you contacted them to find out why they haven't issued said credit. Slam dunk. At least this has been my personal experience, your bank may not expect as much but it won't hurt and giving seller another day or two to respond won't hurt anything.

Filing a dispute now since it's been about 3 weeks would also be acceptable if you choose, but if I were in your shoes, I would consider it slightly premature without contacting seller again on the off chance that they made a mistake or it was an oversight. Next time you're expecting a credit from anyone, I wouldn't give them more than two weeks for it to show up before I start asking them where my money is.

Refund deadlines

If you've agreed to issue a refund for an item, you must do so within 3 days of promising the refund or within 3 days of receiving the returned item. Go to the Resolution Center to issue a refund.

If the buyer used a payment method other than PayPal, it's important that you refund the buyer using the same payment method used to buy the item. This prevents buyers from getting two refunds—one from you and one from the credit card company.

If the buyer doesn't receive the refund within 3 days, the buyer can ask eBay to help. If you agreed to refund a buyer but haven't provided one, eBay will refund the buyer:

I personally wouldn't do a Paypal dispute because OP is concerned about beating the 9/15 due date deadline and a Paypal dispute won't suspend that where as if he disputed directly with his credit card issuer it would be suspended. Also, I lost a Paypal dispute once then disputed it with my credit card issuer and won so for me Paypal was a middle man and a waste of time.

I cant thank all of you enough for all the information on how to deal with my purchase problem.
Several years ago my life fell apart all over the place, I was also financially devastated. Then one day while online I stumbled upon this SD community and was amazed by all the incredible deal information. And not just amazed by all the deal information but overwhelmed that so many helpful people could come together on one forum and offer so much deal help to each other. This community has made the difference in myself being very down in life to now being able to hold my head up and keep putting one foot in front of the other each day. And once again SD members have offered very useful information to yet another problem I've stumbled into. To SD member favored you mentioned it being better to request the refund in writing before disputing the charges, would an email to the eBay seller be sufficient enough or should I snail mail a written request ?

An email would be fine or even the "contact seller" link on Ebay. It doesn't have to be snail mail as you only need proof that you contacted them and what their response was. I said "in writing" so that you don't call them and have no proof.
